How do I.....? (Posts)
Putting pictures into posts
CODE
[img]http://www.somewebsite.com/picture.jpg[/img]

You can put up to 2 pictures in a post.  The pictures must be linked from a website somewhere; you can't upload pictures into your posts.  Don't post pictures that are wider than 500 pixels or so; not everyone has a huge monitor and your pictures end up stretching the screen, causing previous and subsequent posts to go off the screen.  Also, do not post pictures that you wouldn't want your kids to see.  No porn, no graphic images, etc.

Putting links into posts
CODE
[url=http://www.somewebsite.com/abc/123/def/456/page.html]Link[/url]

This appears as Link.
You can also post the regular http://www.somewebsite.com/abc/123/def/456/page.html , but it doesn't look as nice.

Quoting text
CODE
[quote]This is a sentence.  This is another sentence.[/quote]

This is used to grab a phrase or 2 from a previous post or an article.  On this board, it's recommended that you limit the amount of quoting.  Don't quote posts with pictures, don't quote giant posts, and don't cause a chain of quotes back-to-back-to-back.  This saves room in the database, plus there's less scrolling involved to move through a thread.

Bolding text
CODE
[b]text[/b]

This appears as text.

Italicizing text
CODE
[i]text[/i]

This appears as text.

Underlining text
CODE
[u]text[/u]

This appears as text.

Striking through text
CODE
[s]text[/s]

This appears as text.

Adding color to text
CODE
[color=red]text[/color]

This appears as text.  If you know HTML, the hex codes will work here as well, so if you use #00454D, you'll get the Eagles midnight green color!

Changing size of text
CODE
[size=10]text[/size]

This appears as text.  Please use proper judgement; don't post in all huge letters.

Changing font of text
CODE
[font=Arial]text[/font]

This appears as text.  If you know HTML or Microsoft products, most of the common fonts work here.

Creating lists
CODE
[list][*]blue[*]green[*]red[/list]

This appears as:
  • blue
  • green
  • red

Is there a limit to the number of EMB Smilies (emoticons) that can be placed in a post?

How do I.....?  What is....? (Profile and Misc.)
(Everything is done from the Control Panel.  Click on the "My Controls" link at the top.)

Adding an avatar (the picture appearing to the left of your posts)
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Edit Avatar Settings".  You can link to a picture on another website or you can choose one of the default ones supplied.  The option to upload your own doesn't work.

Adding a personal picture (the picture appearing in your profile)
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Change Personal Photo".  You can link to a picture on another website.  The option to upload your own doesn't work.

Adding a signature
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Edit Signature".  HTML was disabled on signatures, so you can only type text in this area.  No pictures, no colors, and no links.  (If you see people that still have non-text items in their signatures, they had them in place before the HTML was disabled and haven't edited them recently.)

Adding a personal statement
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Edit Personal Portal Information".  You can leave a short message here.

Editing your profile
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Edit Profile Info".  The fields seen on this page (location, interests, etc.) will be shown to everyone when they click on your name to see your profile.

Changing the text under an avatar
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Edit Profile Info".   If you have 1,001 posts or more, you'll "earn" the ability to change this yourself.

Adding a person to your Friends list
Highlight your mouse over a person's name to make a dropdown menu appear.  One of the options listed will be "Add as Friend".  You can also find this link within a person's profile.  Depending on how that person has configured their Friends settings, it will be added to your list automatically, or it will be put into a pending status until the other person approves the addition.

Removing a person from your Friends list
Click on the person's profile, then click the "Remove Friend" link below their avatar.

Notifications and moderation of the Friends list and Comments
Under the Personal Profile section on the left, click on "Edit Personal Portal Information".  This section lets you determine how to be notified when people add you or approve you, and it lets you determine if Friends and Comments can be left automatically or must be approved by you first.

I set it to require my approval first.  Where do I go to approve or deny them?
Under the Options section on the left, click on "Manage Friend List".  It's quicker to just click on "My Friends" at the top, then when the new window pops open, click on the "Friends Pending Approval" tab.

Disabling the ability to have other members email you (hiding your email address)
Under the Options section on the left, click on "Email Settings" and check the appropriate box.

Changing the timezone and setting daylight savings time
Under the Options section on the left, click on "Board Settings".  Choose your timezone, then click on the checkbox if your area is currently under daylight savings time (DST).

Preventing signatures, images and avatars from being displayed
Under the Options section on the left, click on "Board Settings" and change the appropriate dropdown lists to Yes or No.

Changing the number of topics and posts per page
Under the Options section on the left, click on "Board Settings" and change the appropriate dropdown lists to the amount you'd like.

Turning off subscriptions to topics and forums
If you are constantly getting emails about an update to a topic or forum, you may have accidentally subscribed to something.  Under the Subscriptions section on the left, click on "View Topics" or "View Forums" and clear out anything listed in there.

Blocking posts from other members
Under the Options section on the left, click on "Manage Ignored Users".  Enter a screenname, then click on the "Update Ignored Users" button.

Blocking PMs from other members
Under the Messenger section on the left, click on "PM Block List".  Enter a screenname, then set "Allow this member to message you?" to No.

I can't send or receive private messages!
The board limits you to a combined 50 items in your Inbox and Sent Items (2% per item).  Clear them out periodically.

===============================================
===============================================

What are the different ranks for post count?
1 = Newbies (1-49)
2 = Training Camp Body (50-99)
3 = Practice Squad (100-249)
4 = Backup (250-999)
5 = Starter (1000-2499)
6 = Superstar (2500-4999)
7 = Hall-of-Famer (5000-9999)
8 = EMB Legend (10000-49999)
9 = EMB Fossil (50000+)

How did some of the posters get negative post counts?
They asked an admin to change it.

How do I change my screen name?
Send a PM to Moderator1, Moderator3 or Moderator5 with the new name you want.  Check to make sure someone else doesn't have it already first, your new name must be 15 characters or less, and it cannot be offensive.

Where is this "chat room" people talk about?
In the upper-right corner of the screen, click on the "Chat" button.  (Some workplaces will block this activity, so use judgment.  Also, some older browsers may need to be updated before this will work.)

You can also reach it by clicking here.

Is there a way I can see who is in the room without going in?
On the main page of the board, scroll all the way to the bottom.  Under the listing of who is currently viewing the board, you will see a list of chat participants (only if anyone is using the room).

Why does it keep asking me to log in?
If you have a link to this board, change the location from http://eagles.hosttown.com (old URL) to http://boards.philadelphiaeagles.com (new URL).

What is "Fast Reply"?
When you click the regular Reply buttons, a new page loads up with all the different smilies and HTML buttons.  If you already know the codes, or you just want to type a simple text message, click the Fast Reply button and a small textarea box will appear.  Type your message and post it....simple as that!

What is that warning meter, and why don't I see it for anyone else?
Everyone has a warning meter that starts at 0% and you can only see your own.  The moderators and admins will use this to warn you when you've broken a rule and/or become a nuisance, and if you click on the percentage, you can see the notes they leave.  Each warning is a 20% increment.  If you reach 60%, you get suspended for 2 weeks.  If you try to sneak back in during your first suspension, it jumps to 80%, another 4 weeks are added (6 total) and the clone account is banned.  80% is a 4-week suspension.  100% is a ban.  People often ask if there's a way to get their warning level reduced.  That's up to the discretion of the moderators/admins, and most of the time there's a minimum of 6 months after the most recent warning before they'd consider it.

What are those stars next to the topic title?
You can rate a topic to let others know if it's good or not.  5 stars means it's awesome, and 1 star means it sucks and should be ignored.  You can only vote once.  To submit a vote for a topic, look for the Rating dropdown menu on the right side of the topic title bar within the thread.  As you move your mouse over the stars, they will fill up.  Click the star on the right to give a 5-star rating, or click the star on the left to give a 1-star rating.

Can I rate posters as well?
Yes!  Click on their profile, then choose the appropriate star rating (1-5 stars) below the avatar where it says "Rate me".

What happened to the "ON"/"OFF" indicator that told me if someone was online or offline?
In the latest version of the MB software, it has been moved to the left of the person's name.  If someone is offline, it will be gray.  If someone is online, it will be "lit up" with orange skin and a red shirt.  (NOTE: if someone is logged in anonymously, this indicator will appear gray as if they're offline.)

What are the blue, pink or clear indicators in a person's profile?
This lets you know if a poster is male or female.  If it is clear/very light blue, they haven't updated their setting (or they don't know what they are! ohmy.gif )

What does this mean? (Message board)
A list of some common terms and phrases used on the board:

EMB
Eagles Message Board

TATE
Talk About the Eagles (the main section of the site)

"TATEr"
Used by some of the board regulars to refer to a person that posts dumb ideas or consistently-repeated topics (often with awful grammar) on TATE. (e.g. "____ got released.  Let's get him!!!!", "Did you guys see that we signed.....?", "GET URLAKKKKKKKKKKERZ!!!!1")

WU
What's Up (the off-topic or "OT" section of the site)

PM
Private message.  When you want to talk to someone directly, use the private messaging system.  Don't start topics.

FWIW, LOL, STFU, etc.
Here's a link to common "Net lingo".  smile.gif

BUMP
A simple post that moves a topic to the top of the screen.

n00b or Newbie
Used by some of the board regulars to refer to someone with less than 50 posts or someone that isn't up to speed on their Eagles knowledge.

Bandwagon fan
Reference to someone over 12 that only started liking the Eagles since 2000 and has no clue about anything that happened to this team during the "down" years.

Spam, spamming and spammers
Similar to the junk mail you get, you will occasionally see someone promote a product, a website, an ebay auction, etc., on this board.  Soliciting on this site is not allowed, and the MODs will deal with it.  On this site, spam is also a reference to people (usually fans from other teams) that sign up and flood the boards with new topics attacking the Eagles and their fans.

LHS and RHS
Used during game threads, these are short for "left hand side" (to the left of the center) and "right hand side" (to the right of the center).  For example "Westbrook RHS for 2 yards" means that he ran towards Jon Runyan's side of the field.

FC
Used during game threads, this is short for "fair catch".

What does this mean? (Football)
A list of some common football terms and phrases used on the board:

"WCO"
Short for "West Coast Offense", the offensive system used by Andy Reid and other teams that was engineered by Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s.  Unlike other systems that rely on shotgun, deep passes and power running games, the WCO relies on short passes to multiple receivers (WRs, TEs and RBs) to spread the offense, then the receivers must turn the short play into a long one with yards after the catch ("YAC").  The offense usually also requires a quarterback that can scramble and escape the pocket if needed.   More detailed info can be found at WestCoastOffense.com.

"The pocket"
The area behind the offensive line between the left tackle (LT) and right tackle (RT).  If McNabb rolls out to the right and is closer to the sideline than Jon Runyan, he has "escaped the pocket".

"The red zone"
The area from the opponent's 20-yard line to their goalline.

"Option"
After the snap, the QB runs off-tackle and either continues to run or pitches the ball backwards at the last moment to a RB running in the same direction.  While it catches defenses off guard, it gets your QB killed.

"Play action"
After the snap, the QB pretends to hand the ball off to a RB before throwing it.

"Screen pass"
After the snap, the QB throws a very short pass to a receiver (RB, WR or TE) behind the line of scrimmage, relying on the receiver to pick up all the yardage.

"Bootleg"
After the snap, the QB pretends to hand the ball off to a RB going in one direction then runs in the opposite direction (to pass or run).

"Shotgun"
The QB lines up 5 or more yards behind the center, giving him more time to read the defense and avoid tacklers but increasing the chances of a miscue (fumble, bad snap, etc.).

"Pitch"
After the snap, the QB underhands a toss to a RB that is running towards the sideline.

"Intentional grounding"
Penalty called when the QB, while still in the pocket, throws the ball away or into the ground to avoid a loss of yardage.

"X Receiver"
Also called a "split end", the receiver that lines up on the line of scrimmage, on the opposite side from the tight end.

"Y Receiver"
The tight end or slot receiver (the one that lines up between an OT and another WR).

"Z Receiver"
Also called a "flanker", the receiver that lines up off the line of scrimmage, on the same side as the tight end.

"Quick Out" route
Receiver runs 5 yards then cuts 90 degrees towards the sideline.

"Deep Out" route
Receiver runs 10 yards then cuts 90 degrees towards the sideline.

"Flag" or "Post" route
Receiver runs 8 yards, fakes, then takes off at an angle towards a corner of the endzone.

"Shoot" or "Chair" route
Receiver runs about 5 yards, runs toward the sideline for a few steps, then takes off straight again.

"Fly" or "Streak" route
Receiver takes off and keeps running, usually in a straight path.

"Curl" route
Receiver runs about 12 yards then curls/turns around and stops to prepare for a catch.  (Think of a candy cane.)

"Slant" route
Receiver takes a couple of steps then runs at an angle towards the sideline.

"I Formation"
The running back lines up behind the fullback (or another RB).

"SAM", "WILL" and "MIKE"
Commonly used to refer to linebackers (LBs), the first letter of each corresponds to the specific types (Strong, Weak and Middle).  The strongside LB (SLB) lines up on the same side as the opponent's tight end (TE).  The weakside LB (WLB) lines up on the opposite side.  The middle LB (MLB) lines up between them.

"4-3 Defense"
The most common defensive setup, with 2 DEs, 2 DTs and 3 LBs (4 defensive linemen and 3 linebackers).

"3-4 Defense"
Defensive setup with 2 DEs, a big fat nose tackle (NT) and 4 LBs (3 defensive linemen and 4 linebackers).

"Nickel Defense"
5 defensive backs are used instead of the usual 4.  Often used against teams that like to pass a lot, like St. Louis or Indianapolis.

"Dime Defense"
6 defensive backs are used instead of the usual 4, but this leaves only 1 linebacker.  Usually used on 3rd-and-long plays.

"Zone" or "Prevent" defense
Often used late in games to prevent huge passing plays, the LBs and DBs back away from the line of scrimmage a bit and stay in certain areas of the field to guard against huge plays of 20 or more yards.  The negative is that an offense can slowly chip away with 5-10 yard plays and move right down the field, causing some to say that "a prevent defense only prevents you from winning".

"Man-to-Man"
Each defensive back (2 cornerbacks and 2 safeties) is assigned to cover a wide receiver.

"Bump and Run"
Technique used by cornerbacks to jam WRs within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage and not allow them to get into their pattern or catch a pass.  Was used early and often by the Panthers in the NFC championship game.  dry.gif

"Cover 2"
The 2 safeties are assigned to each cover half of the field while the 2 CBs and 3 LBs split the middle part of the defense into 5 equal areas.  The CBs and LBs attack and won't let the receivers move around or get deep, but if someone breaks through, the safety is back there to help double-team.

The ability to create new threads in those two forums have been turned off temporarily during the draft to help reduce clutter for everyone.  (General discussion threads will be created as the Eagles make their picks)

Why can't I upload an avatar or personal photo in my profile?

The upload feature does not work at this time. The image you would like to use will have to be hosted at a different site. There are free sites available like:

photobucket.com
imageshack.us

...that work fine here. Once the image is hosted wherever you decide to do so, you only need to copy the URL of the image (usually, you can right-click the picture with your mouse, click "properties" and then copy (or select all) the location/address of the image) and then paste it in your avatar settings:

-My controls
--Edit avatar settings
--- then paste it in the area following the "Enter a URL to an online avatar image" message.*

* the default in the URL area probably already says: http:// -- You will need to clear that out first if you are pasting the complete URL for the pic you are using as it will already be including the necessary "http://.

In other words, it should look something like this: http://imagehostingsiteofyourchoice/generi...der/picname.jpg
It should not look like this ----------------------------: http://http://imagehostingsiteofyourchoice...der/picname.jpg

I've never seen a msg board so ridiculously hard to upload an avatar, picture, etc.  I went to Photoshop, photobucket, imageshack, my own stock, everything.  I've uploaded urls, I mean c'mon.  Nothing works.  I keep getting error messages across the board.  What's the deal?

I was able to do an avatar but can't understand why 1 would go in but another, the same size wouldn't.  Also can't do a personal picture no matter what.

How many posts must you have in order to have the option of deleting and/or locking your own threads?

It's permission-based at the admin level.

are polls no longer permitted?

I wanted to make a poll, but the option is no longer available.

Is this system-wide or just an error on my profile?
