The NFL has voided Payton's contract and with the Saints and he is officially a free agent when he finishes his suspension. The guy might be the best HC in the NFL, his absence has been severely impactful and telling this year. If I have a blank cheque, this is the coach I go after.

That would be so sick....but I'm guessing he stays with the Saints.

They're saying he has ties to Dallas and Philly

did you even read anything about it? his contract is not voided and nobody knows if he will even be a FA next season.

Quote

The fact that Payton’s existing deal surely contains a clause giving the league office final say over any disputes involving the Saints and Payton means that, if the Saints take the position that Payton’s one-year suspension delays his contract by a year, Commissioner Roger Goodell will make the final decision.  Which means that Payton most likely won’t be walking away after 2012 unless the Saints want him to.

I must admit I like the possibility of Peyton over the other names Bleacher Report was suggesting last week: Gruden, Cowher, Billick, Marinelli, etc. Not one was an up and coming coach. Unless you want to count Rob Ryan, but I don't think RR has what it takes to be a successful HC.

I'd hire him in a heartbeat. Look what he did for the Saints, they were GARBAGE year in and out. And Drew Brees was a good QB, but never did he seem capable of record breaking performances whilst he was in San Diego. Finally, look at how Brees and the Saints are now? Loser without their head coach. If he is available, bringing him in should be top priority. Though dallas might have a vacancy as well and im sure Jerruh would love nothing more, than to bring him back.

If Lurie does not hire this man then he is certifiable insane. However I think the cowboys would top any financial offer that Lurie puts out. He can coach, is a absolute genius on game day and is brilliant.

Just because Goodell says the contract should be voided doesnt mean that the Saints want to walk away from Peyton.  Nor does it mean that Peyton wants to walk away from the Saints.  It just means that the wording in the contract doesn't meet NFL standards.  They can easily correct the problem...if they want to....which I'd imagine they do.

Some poor reporting by the media there.

Yes, Payton's contract was voided...last year and widely reported back then. Payton had a contract going through 2012. He signed an extension. The extension contained language that the NFL didn't like, so the extension was voided and he fell back to his existing contract that goes through 2012.

With Payton suspended through 2012, it is likely that his contact will "toll," or roll-over like a suspended player's contract, thus, he's with the Saints through 2013.

I don't think he is going to leave either, but if he does and Lurie passes on him, I'll pretty much be done with this team for a while.

People are clueless. Statements like "If Lurie doesn't hire him, he's this or that..." There are 2 sides to contract negotiations. Payton has to want to come here to begin with. No amount of money is going to be the deciding factor. Payton knows he'll get his money wherever he goes. It's going to come down to the organizational choices (I.E. the Front Office) and who's running the defense. Now, Lurie should go as hard after Payton as he can. But, Payton has to ultimately want to come back also.

Right, because it's not like Lurie has repeatedly outspent other teams to bring talent here, or made players the highest paid at their positions, or anything like that.
