Couldn't agree more with this article. Lurie should have either fired Reid last season or backed him 100%.
Lurie will hire a bargain basement coach again because no big time coach will come here.
He should have hired Vermeil when he had the chance in the 90's.
Forget about ever winning a Lombardi with Lurie as owner. It will be a fight to just stay out of the NFC East cellar from now on.
The only team winning "multiple championships" is not the one in Philadelphia.

Lurie stupidly setup Reid to fail.

Are you kidding?

This is a seasoned coach that does not have a meddling owner like Jerry Jones or the recently deceased Al Davis.
Andy Reid has had every opporuntity to customize this teamto his desires. Lurie even opened the purse and added hugh FA' s in recent years.

Andy Reid has had every chance possible. Andy's plan and adjustments had time to suceed over 14 years .

Andy Reid has tried to find the correct formula. He has failed over and over. It is time for a change.

Andy Reid is a hard worker and may possibly win a lombardi trophy at some point. Unfortunately I no longer believe it is possible for andy reid to win here.

AR has lost most of us: fans, players, and ownership. I thought i had grown out of interest in the NFL until yesterday. I watched other teams perform and succeed. I realized the NFL is very watchable, It is the Eagles that are unwatchable and depressing.

Andy, you gave it a shot but it is time to go.

I foolishly believe the exact opposite.

I think Lurie believed that the main culprit to the crummy season last year was the lockout combined with new players.  I think he really believed Reid was going to get the team back into the playoffs, rather easily.

I think all that big talk was really a big show of support that seems to have backfired.

Lurie put Reid on the clock so you fans would know that he gets it.  He gave Reid this year because you made the playoffs in 2010.

Agreed, but I don't think Reid will go elsewhere and win a SB. His style of coaching has ran its course here and he is just too stubborn to go out of his element and do something else. Choosing to sign Vick in hindsight was a win-win but in the end it hasn't worked out. It's the way it goes and it is time for a change.

Andy set him self up to fail when he hired an offensive line coach to be his defensive coordinator, allowed Vick to remain the starter despite playing like a bottom of the barrel qb, and his refusal to acknowledge the importance of running the football and sticking with it.

Wow. Terrible thread.

Lurie is one of the best owners in the NFL and has done everything possible while staying out of the way to bring the Eagles fans a SB. The only thing I think he failed at was not getting rid of AR when the McNabb/Westy/Dawk era ended.

agreed. i think any good coach would want to work for Lurie. he's not a meddling owner. he's proven that he'll stick by a guy for a long time. the facility is top notch.. whats' not to like?

Falcon fan hit the nail on the head. Letting the fans know that he gets it. And has reached his limit of patience .
Just how many more seasons  is he  suppose to be content with missing out ?  A coach who he has given many opportunites to succeed.

Most coaches would have been replaced a long time ago. But  Andy would have a good run in the second half of the seasons. Allowing Lurie to keep him. and to continue his wishful thinking that this must be the year. Only to find out it wasn't.

He did what any employer would do. Tell his employee he has to bring his performance up to a higher level. Or he will find someone who has the ability to do so.

Bowen is a senile fool. Reid was given full authority to do whatever he wanted in the offseason. He signed those contracts. Everybody said Reid will do it his way and he was allowed to. If I was the owner, I would have fired his lard a** after loss to Carolina in NFCG long time ago.

This thread isnt about reids 14 seasons its about last season and this season and how lurie should have either fired him last year or backed him this year. i agree with the OP lurie set reid up this year to fail, by giving him an ultimatum Lurie took away reids power over his players, guys start worrying about next year where they will be and if they will be cut or want to be traded, plus with the added pressure to "win or else" guys start pressing and when guys start pressing they make mistakes.

This isnt reids team anymore like it used to be, its full of mercenaries loyal to their pay checks and other guys waiting for luries shoe to drop. Bad  mix. Want to blame somebody, start at the top with ownership.

look at other successful organizations what do they have in common? strong owner ship. the steelers the ravens the giants packers all great owners for a long time.

I agree with OP, the awful state of the eagles starts at the top, jeff Lurie i blame you.

I suspect Lurie may be waiting to see if the Penn State alumni still angry over what went down last year tries for force an ouster of Bill o'Brien at Penn State as I think may still happen after the season in Happy Valley (many of that alumni were angry Tom Bradley, who coached Penn State's last four games a year ago was not retained as head coach).  If that is attempted, I think Lurie brings in o'Brien if he can, as he has Penn State at 6-3 when anyone else, dealing with what he has would probably have been 2-7 or 3-6 at this point.  If the alumni still angry leave o'Brien alone, he could very well be at Penn State for 20 years or more, though I suspect there will be NFL teams calling for him.

According to Jon Gruden who should shut the **** up many times during ESPN MNF; The rest of the NFC East will breathe a sigh of relief when Andy Reid is fired.  It's one thing to support Andy Reid, it's another to want to have gay sex with him.  That was such utter BS.  Maybe Jerry Jones is dumb enough to hire Reid, or Snyder after he fires his fifth failed coach?    Snyder will hire him because he'll doop the Redskins into a Superbowl run, only to lose the NFC Championship because Reid doesn't know how to change his "set in stone" game plan.   Think about it....RGIII, with Andy Reid?    That's Super-Donovan!  Go ahead, and hire him Danny.

We are about to find out if Bill O'Brien has the loyalty to PSU that Paterno had after he became a successful college head coach.   In 1973, the New England Patriots wanted to hire JoePa.    He turned them down.  Of course JoePa wasn't facing three more years of sanctions.   O'Brien's integrity is about to be tested.   He's won over the JoePa loyalists, and that's not easy to do.  The collective want O'Brien to stay, especially after he's turned McGlynn into a real QB, and beat the crap out of Iowa in their stadium.   Paterno could NEVER beat Iowa home or road.   There are other options, and I think it's time for Lurie to hire a defensive mind as HC again.
