Dave,

What are your thoughts on this article which includes quotes from NFL Analyst Brian Baldinger and Brian Westbrook?

http://www.csnphilly...1207&feedID=704

Notable quotes:

“Dallas has six men in the box and you have maybe the best running back in the league,’ Baldinger said. “I’ll never understand why they don’t just put a hat on a hat (blocking) and let Shady run. It’s so frustrating to watch, but it’s the only way they know how to coach.”

The Dallas Cowboys played virtually the entire game Sunday in a nickel defense. No surprise there.

Most often they were pointing at a Dallas defense that was set up for a McCoy run. The linemen, especially DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer on the edges, were ready to rush the quarterback. The linebackers were set to drop into coverage. The cornerbacks were one-on-one outside and the safeties were 20 to 25 yards deep.

“They play like they are losing by 10 points all the time,” said Westbrook, who played in this offense for eight seasons.

I know that you say that everyone is frustrated and wants to win, but I don't get it. Why do we try to pass it when it's obvious that we should be running the ball more? Game after game after game. The Eagles went through a stretch of 13 (13!!!!!) possessions and handed the ball off to McCoy 13 (13!!!) times. This in a game we were in for the most part, with a rookie QB, with no other QB to come in if he were to get hurt. Can't use the "we were behind" excuse.

Why do we consistently appear to attempt to play right into the opposing team's hands game in and game out. What is the logic?

Why do we try to make things harder than what they need to be? With a rookie freakin QB no less? Why do we always have to try to go against the grain??? Dave???? PLEASE??? WTF???

Time after time we have had chances to right this ship this year, but time and time again they stick with the same approach. I thought Reid looked at everything after each loss?

And now us fans have to take it up the arse for yet another year from other team's fans.

We're the embarrassment right now and it didn't have to be this way, this year. We had the tools to fix the shortcomings/injuries on this team, but Reid or Marty or whoever the hell comes up with the same stupid game plan every game continues to try to outsmart the opponent. Can't outsmart anyone when you're this freakin clueless.

The Giants won the damn super bowl with more injuries then we've had...so I don't want to hear that crap. You adjust. Adjust!!! Freakin adjust!!! Learn it Marty. Learn it Reid.

Running the ball against a defense setup to defend the pass doesn't seem like a real hard obstacle here.

Good freakin lord. No wonder the defense stopped tackling. What the heck is the point when you're just going to be thrown back out on the field momentarily.

Trent Edwards wasn't even active, Foles was the only QB dressed beyond Vick and we pass heavied yet again. Just unbelievable.

When a team constantly plays nickel against you and you have Shady McCoy, what do you Dave? If you had a chance to call some plays, what do you do?

Do you throw it on 2nd and 3 right after your rookie quarterback got laid the f out by Ware while completing the 7 yard pass to setup the 2nd and 3? Do you really pass again there??? F'n seriously!!!?!?!??!?

Oh..........my..............god.... checking pulse....Done.

No offense, but exactly what team have you been watching for the last decade and a half?

Only asking because you seem to be under the bizarre impression that this stuff just started this season.

Serious question, do the Iggles have any coaches up in the booth? Or are the all on the field?

I ask because how do they not see, play after play, how the Dallas D is lining up? Or what personal they have, what formations they are employing, against the Iggles O?

The simple answer is stupidity.... but I am not sure Reid is a dumb guy. MArty is, but I don't think Andy is....

With Andy however, its pure and simple arrogance.... my way is the only way and if I give in, I am admitting I have been wrong all these years.

Have fun in San Diego next year.... 14 years of maddening frustration here in Philly finally over.

They have to look at everything and put the players in a better position to make plays - what don't you understand about that?  It means "I came from BYU and I am throwing regardless of what the other team because I am smarter than you and all the defensive coordinators in the NFL"  My only regret is that I could not one time get to watch a Jim Johnson defense play against a Andy Reid offense he would have had 5 turnovers and 5 sacks minimum knowing he would never run.

We had some opportunities, I just have to put the players in better position to make plays.  We are just a hair off.  This is fixable.

I obviously agree that Reid is the personification of arrogance, but is it only arrogance to allow a 'stupid' guy to run your offense?      And for a season and a half, have an equally clueless guy running the defense?       At a time where you job security is at its shakiest?

I don't know, pat, but I think the jury is out whether a smart guy creates a situation like that.

Dave,

What are your thoughts on this article which includes quotes from NFL Analyst Brian Baldinger and Brian Westbrook?

I'm going to take a stab at a serious response for you.  You seem to be a younger fan (which is ok) and maybe have not dealt with this issue as long as the rest of us, or have not been aware because in seasons' past the team has managed to win more despite this philosophy.

Reid and Marty want to "keep firing" their big plays in hopes that it will work and they'll score a lot of points and make the other team have to pass, and focus on pass rushing the other QB.  Don't worry about stopping the run, don't worry about great LBs or Safeties.  Just have good corners and a D line.  Once we have a big lead, we can run the ball.  But even with a lead, if they feel they can exploit the defense and get more big plays, they can't resist passing to try to keep scoring even if running the ball would make more sense to eat clock, prevent turnovers and give the other team less opportunity to come back.

That, plus they want an offense that is pass happy but the problem is you need an elite QB to do that.  A perfect QB for their style would be someone like Drew Brees. But since McNabb's early years were exciting, Reid has liked the idea of a QB that can make plays from the pocket or on the run.  But that formula doesn't always work and they continually put a square peg in a round hole at QB.

It's particularly frustrating when over the last 2 seasons the problems have been turnovers and the other team coming back to win/our defense breaking down.  If you run the ball you eat clock, protect your injury prone QB and greatly reduce the risk of turnovers.  Reid is too stubborn to realize that and change his pass happy philosphy, even with how bad the team has become over the last 2 seasons.

On top of all that, it's not like we only have mediocre running backs.  Westbrook was great but he was less of a pure runner than McCoy, we was great as a receiving RB and in the open field was a big playmaker.  McCoy is a much better pure runner, but also elusive when out in the open to make a play.  He has insane YPC but Reid doesn't give him the ball enough.  And we've seen games where he does feed McCoy and it works.  And we scratch our heads:  why doesn't he run more???

It could be 3rd and 1 with McCoy in the backfield which more often than not would be an easy 1st down.  But Reid wants to outsmart the defense and pass.  But he doesn't just pass a quick slant to get the first down.  He figures if he's not going to run and try to fool the defense, they'll really never see a long bomb coming.  That's where you hear them say comments like "we saw something in the defense we thought we could exploit."  Instead of doing what conventional football says to do and what works for most teams most of the time, he wants the big play.  He likes QBs to be gun slingers (he coached Brett Favre) and he believes in his philosophy and doesn't change.  He doesn't adjust.  He just "keeps firing."

Hopefully Lurie will fire Reid and then look at the rest of the staff and "keep firing."

That's on me, I have to find ways to put our guys in a better position to make plays

(like put the ball in the running back's hand maybe? )
