Hey, Drew, BigLou, or any of the other statniks out there, do we have any solid numbers behind how often we run the Nine Technique? It seem like when I watch the games I don't see it all that often. A fair amount of the 4 1/2 technique, where just one DE lines up wide, but not the full Nine.
Does anybody have an actual count?

Nine technique refers to a defensive end lining up on the outside shoulder of the tight end. It's not an actual defensive system, simply where the end lines up on a particular play.
0 technique= head up on center
1 technique= shade on center
2 technique= head up on guard
3 technique= outside shoulder of guard
4 technique= head up on tackle
5 technique= outside shoulder of tackle
6 technique= head up on tight end
7 technique= inside shoulder of tight end
9 technique= outside shoulder of tight end
0 technique= head up on center
1 technique= shade on center
2 technique= head up on guard
3 technique= outside shoulder of guard
4 technique= head up on tackle
5 technique= outside shoulder of tackle
6 technique= head up on tight end
7 technique= inside shoulder of tight end
9 technique= outside shoulder of tight end

I think OP knows that^^
They still run it a fair amount but those other guys may know percentages. What infuriates me is seeing it on 3 and short or any other running down. Just folly.

it could be quite effective if you had decent linebackers to fill the gaps and get to the qb or stop the run

We don't line up in the technique too often, seeing as how we are trailing in every game we play in.
This D is meant to play with the lead.

Right. I was being facetious with my "4 1/2 Technique" comment. What I meant by that was, say, one DE at the Nine & the other in a more traditional 5 or 6 position

7 is the outside shoulder of the TE. 9 is lining up 1 player wider, even if there is no one there. The nose of the football is 0 and you count shoulders out from that point, so both the C's shoulders are 1, OG 2 and 3, OT 4 and 5, TE 6 and 7.
