Bowles is an intruiging prospect, and still somewhat of an enigma....

Here's a guy who has a system he might not like, and players he might not want, and he's expected to make the best of it...I'm curious as to how Bowles might have shaped the defense if he was in charge from day one, as it were.

And let's face it, he does not have a lot to work with...

Coleman (barf)
Nate bite on the fake Allen
Akeem Jordan - role player , how often have we even heard his name?
Cole - invisible
Babin - invisible
Cox - one bright spot
Ryans - another bright spot
Nnamdi - who might be an elite CB, we are all still waiting to see it.
DRC - Gets INTs - but only when the ball is thrown right at him.

when have we heard an announcer say "That's a great play by______________" (fill in Defensive starters name), aside from Ryans.

Which leads me to the next point...will Bowles be the guy that is interviewed as per the Rooney Rule? Or will it be someone like Moss? Fewell? I read a rumor , mind you it is a RUMOR, that Koetter, the OC from the Falcons is going to be the hot commodity this offseason, and that Lurie has his eyes set on him...

Fewell will get some interest, but just because he shut US down doesn't mean we should automatically get him, wasn't that the thinking with Washburn? Winston Moss has a pretty impressive resume, and he might be a guy to look at  (Rooney rule aside!).

my personal choice WOULD be a defensive minded coach..our team has completely lost its identity..we used to be a punishing, turnover forcing, QB mauling defense with snarl that made OGs and OTs tremble...and we NEED to get back to that

or if we go with a former OC, let's take a guy who builds a team with an identity, a guy who uses the strengths of the players he has, who values the running game, and doesn't just talk about it.

I agree with OP. This isn't a fair shot for Bowles. The players on this team have quit. Taking over during a bye for someone who's never been DC before is ridiculous anyway. And let's face it the safeties were either in the right spot or supposed to be on the TDs so it wasn't even the playcalling that was the problem. Now that's a lot of excuses and I'm not saying Bowles is good but it's just not a fair situation to judge

Never understood why he was given the D-cooridnator role. He was the secondary coach......Our secondary is horrible. So you take the guy coaching them and put him in charge of everyone? Makes no sense. Allen and Coleman have been biting on plays all season...that doesn't look well for Bowles. In fact, Sims should be starting.

It is hard to grade Bowles based upon the "mood" of the team but our secondary has been torched all year, even when Bowles was the secondary coach. I agree that our personnel is sorry but it is just inexcuseable for our secondary to be blowing plays like this game after game. We look pitiful, twice yesterday our coverage was blown because of players being out of position.

Nnamdi, see ya!

... and I don't think he will be ready to be a head coach.  Some people just doesn't have it in them to be a head coach.  He might turn out to be a fine DC someday, but he surely turned a serviceable defensive unit into probably the worst in the NFL.

Yea I honestly dont see Bowles being anywhere near this team next season.

The only assistants that possibly will be retained will be some of the lower level QC/position coaches like Duce Staley, Mike Zordich, Ted Williams, and Mike Caldwell.

As far as head coach canidates, its really up in the air lots of names have been tossed around, but the top 3 on my list would be.  If Bruce Arians can have a bad Colts team at 6-4 and playing inspired over a head coach with curable cancer then well he could be hot property next season when Pagano returns.  Joe Vitt probably deserves some recognition or maybe Sean Payton deciedes he wants a new start after the whole bounty scandal.  Theres literally dozens of other names I've seen tossed around.

The Rooney Rule is bull crap.  As compettitive as this league is in this day and age, the person best suited for the job will get the hire.  Think Mike Tomlin, Leslie Frazier, Marvin Lewis, Lovie Smtih and Romeo Crennel are head coaches becasue of teh Rooney Rule?  Bull crap, their team thought they were the best at the time.

i think Tomlin busts your story there.   Steelers were leaning heavily towards one of the eventual  two Arizona coaches until Tomlin was interviewed.

On the surface it's BS,   but gaining experience on an intense interview like HC job is pretty darn valuable.

I know it's not all on him, but he took over a mediocre defense and maybe them legendary in their awfulness.   There aren't many teams in the history of the NFL that have put together a worse 4 games on defense than we have since he took over as DC.  Sorry I'm not sold that he's qualified for anything above a position coach.

I agree with Baynit, no coach at the coordinator level or above for next year is currently coaching with the Eagles, all those coaches will be brought in by whoever gets the head coaching job.

I am not a fan of the rule honestly. Say the Lurie and the FO want Gruden as their coach and Gruden has mutual feelings. Should they have to do a BS interview just to appease the rule when everybody knows it is for nothing other than practice for that one particular coach? honestly, why do it?
