[Spadaro] Ground Game Rushes Into Picture

207 posts in this topic

Some of the hyperbole has been outrageous, but fun to read and hear. Bryce Brown has been a dynamo in his two starts during a seven-day span, spurring analysts to make some ridiculous comparisons ...

Brown's talent is hard to miss. He just looks different on the field..... hits the hole very quickly, has a great burst and extremely athletic.

The big question with Brown is can you trust him with the ball in a big spot.

Fortunately it may be a while before the Eagles find themselves in a big spot so BB has time to work on his ball carrying.

The thought of him and Shady sharing carries with a coach in the future who might actually stay committed to the run game in the future is very promising

Let's remember why they are running the ball you have a rookie QB playing and they want to take pressure off him till he gets intergrated in the system. I love the way they are running the ball the success of Brown really speaks to the strength of the of Oline, they still need improvement in pass blocking they do OK sometimes. They will have to find that balence of run/pass that works for them, I hope Foles improves over the next 4 games and comes back as starting QB and is ready to win out of the gates man. Go Eagles.

Chris Polk is going to be a good back too. I just don't see where Dion will fit next year. Spuds, you are dreaming if you think all four running backs will get quality work next year. Not that many touches available.

Spuds, love seeing you come around to our way of thinking. Everyone has been wondering what the was the point of keeping four running backs and a fullback if they aren't going to use them? This season may just have been a blessing in disguise by forcing the coaches to have to use the running backs and ee what a really good running attack can do for your offense. It makes your offensive line play better, gives your qb a better chance to make plays cause the defense have to respect the run and it shows the coaches what you have on therunning backs you kept on the roster. Just wish they would run more out of the I-formation and power sets to really run down the opponents defense so you can go over the top to the receivers and break the defenses backs!

ok. i'm assuming you all read lawlor. but if you don't, mandatory, his igglesblitz article about overhyping brown.

also, i don't think we can easily foresee how many backs this team will need.

one can assume that, with a change of head coach, comes a change of play-calling, so maybe, just maybe, there will be a lot of touches (well, more touches) for them.

DP...Agreed, Polk needs to be kept and played to see what he has. I too am just not sure where Lewis fits in with the emergence of Brown.

i say keep them all, and the nfl should expand roster size, what with all the injuries and all that, instead of coming up with idiotic rules about contacts and blocking etc.

Thanks for the link Frenchy. And I agree with Lawlor. Having Brown as the featured back the rest of the year might see his production decline, especially against better run defenses like TB. However, having Brown and Shady in the backfield at the same time or spelling each other or having Polk and Havili for short yardage and having a coach who believes in running the ball could very well mean that better things are to come sooner than later with our Iggles :-)

"I've always said that a passing game that gains yards in large chunks is absolutely essential in this league"

I'm sick of Dave saying this. Fact is we were gaining MEGA yards for most of the season, it's just we can't turn the ball overconstantly and fail to close the deal in the RZ. Heck even when we were in FG range this year, we'd penalize ourselves, or get sacked out of it 1/2 the time.

Gaining yards was hardly the issue, and Dave, I'd certainly trade a stout defense and solid running game for pass happy MM and his ridiculous playcalling. Remember when Rex Grossman was in the SB? He had to be the worst SB QB I've ever seen.....and the Bears didn't ride on Rexy's back to get there. It was DEFENSE AND RUNNING THE FOOTBALL!!!! And all this so called "talent" we still keep hearing about? Beyond what's on paper, there is hardly any real TALENT being shown when it counts. I'm sick of all this talent talk.

Oh and..

Free Brizer

Why did it take losing 8 games, and the loss of our starting QB, RB, and WR to realize the same thing that everyone else on this board knew by the end of training camp? Success in 2012 was contingent on sticking with the running game. I thought the coach's were on board when they kept all 4 RB's and Havili. At this point, what was even the purpose of keeping Lewis and Polk on the roster? What a waste of a season.

Baffoons, nitwits, moroons, and hamhox............!! HARK !!

Running game, schunning game.

I good running game is great.....it helps to keep defenses guessing and whart nots..........and if your 2 choices are Have a Good Ground Game or NOT Have a Good Ground Game,........I'll take the formal, rather than the ladder.

But,....in TODAY'S nfl..............it's all about QB play. The Pats......the Pack....even the Steelers......the Giants......they've all been sucksessull this decade, because they have an ace pitcher flinging the ball around.....NOT because of any particular RB they've had.

Yes, you have to have a balanced attack (somewhat anyway)........but even if Bryce Brown becomes the next Earl Campbell..........and rushes for 2 K a year,......we won't win jack-diddly.........unless we get THE GUY at quarterback.

Dave: Why wouldn't the Eagles make the running game the foundation of the offense?

Answer: Because we have AR and MM running our offense.

Not for long.

Having said that.................show me a team that "makes the running game the foundation of the offense", and I'll show you a team that never wins the Superbowl.
