So you don't think RG was a position of glaring need? And given your statement about his looking good against teenagers when he was 26 (yes, he was 26 when he was drafted, not 28), you believe that his age is an advantage rather than a disadvantage?
I think we all expected max jean Gilles to step up that year. the far more glaring hole was right tackle. the better pick would've been gabe carimi. not that he looks that great either but we ended up moving herremans from lg and he hasn't been the same player at rt. and yes I think being 26 in college playing against teenagers is an advantage that should've been taken into account when evaluating his play. now that he's going against grown men he doesn't look like first rd material does he?

I remember hearing that they picked Watkins and almost put my fist through the television.
same he was one of those players that I just want them to stay away from. Because of his age and lack of football experience it never made any sense to me why they would take him in the first

wow, still pining over vick?  for real?  The guy has been lost for 2 years.  The line was fine last year, and vick stunk.  get past it.  Vick is done.  He had 6 games in 2010, and thats it.  Foles has played much better than vick this year and last.  Give the kid a shot, he's proving he has a better arm, he's smarter, can read defenses better.  He's earned the rest of this season and next as well as far as I am concerned.  And Vick can back up in buffalo for all I care.  He shot his load in 2010.

Since we will only have him on the team for a total of maybe 4 years at most, yes, it was a bad pick for a 1st rounder

Watkins hasn't worked out so far. Then again you take a college left tackle, reverse his footwork by putting him on the right side, slide him inside to play a different position and try to teach him some weird Mudd blocking system that many blockers can never get.

That's a lot of changes you are asking from any player let alone a rookie.

To me I've almost given up on him. I'm curious to see what another OL coach will be able to get. Maybe he can end up being a player, but at this point I'm hardly holding my breath.

Man I wish we would of traded that pick to the Rams for their 2012 1st round pick. That would of netted us RG3.

I'm so thankful that didn't happen

I wouldn't have minded Carimi that year, but I was pulling for Mike Pouncey, since I had more faith in Sir Winston than MJG, and I saw RG and a good backup Center as bigger needs.

As regards your comments on Watkins, in hindsight you are of course correct, but at the time he was graded as a late 1st/early 2nd rated pick, who everyone knew would be moved to guard because he wouldn't be able to play OT in the NFL, so they WERE considering the differences between college and the NFL. He was considered to be a very conservative, safe pick who would be plug-n-play.

That turned out to be wrong, but it was the accepted wisdom of the time.

Foles has a duck arm

Even if the new coach moves on with his own qb, this whole team was a problem. How could you have had any confidence with how bad the defense behind you played

Even at the time we all collectively said who and we got exactly that. It took them 10 games to replace him and this line did not nearly look this good for injured Michael Vick. Watch any other Nfl game and you do not see the line break down nearly as fast as ours did.

I like Foles but I think he is a great backup. I don't feel as though Vick was given too great of a shot especially with how bad the defense is.

Danny Watkins was the biggest bust that the eagles have had in a very long time

Well luckily the money we save when we cut Vick can be used for better offensive linemen

Considering there are more busts with the Eagles than the Victoria's Secret catalog, that's saying something.

At first glance it seemed like Watkins was brought in to solidify the O-Line immediately, as you would expect a mid-late 20something drafted in the first round to start immediately. It seemed like the Eagles made a move to contend that year, like we all expected them to do.

In hindsight, this was one of the worst (if not the worst) draft selection Andy Reid has ever made.

The only argument I'd make is they should have known better.  I can give them a pass (to some extent) on a guy like Graham because he was a good prospect and JPP was a project.

With Watkins, however, it was just terrible decision making from start to finish.  Taking a guard in the first round is questionable, period.  Taking an overaged player in the first round is questionable.  Taking a project in the first round is always risky.  Taking a player in the first round to play a different position in the pros is risky.

Taking an overaged project tackle who will convert to guard at the next level is downright stupid.

well, you at least bring Watkins to camp next year and see if he can do anything that's worth keeping.  otherwise you bag his arse.

So the thread title and last line was just a cover-up to your BJ for Vick?  Got it.

Jaiquan Jarrett thanks you

It just blows my mind that those two picks happened in the same draft, 1st and 2nd round!!!!!!!!  How is it even possible to draft two completely useless players that early in the same draft?
