Another week, another mess emanating out of NovaCare. Is this true, Dave?

Quote

Eagles intend to place Patterson back on NFI list, cut his pay

Posted by Mike Florio on December 12, 2012, 2:27 PM EST

Last week, Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson was hospitalized with viral pneumonia. A league source tells PFT that the Eagles now plan to place Patterson on the non-football injury/illness list for the balance of the season.

Per the source, the Eagles also plan to exercise their discretion to reduce Patterson’s pay, not completely but partially.
The move is expected to cause hard feelings, especially since it’s entirely possible that Patterson initially got sick because of practicing or playing in the elements. Moreover, the money that will be saved (roughly $150,000, we’re told) could do far more damage to the team’s relationship with Patterson — or to the reputation of the front office within the locker room.

As the Eagles wrap up a difficult season and prepare for what all appearances will be a new era, it’s not a good look.

Response from Patterson's agent, who just filed a grievance:

Quote

@bobfordsports Mike Patterson's agent: #Eagles GM Howie Roseman "wrong and petty." "This is not how you treat people if you're a winning organization. To do this to one of your leaders and to a guy that fought back from brain surgery is just wrong."

I could say I was shocked & appalled or even mildly surprised by this, but sadly, I'm not anymore.

Absolutely pathetic.

Can't wait for true believers to come along and justify more stupidity from this regime.

It's pathetic. To claim that the pnemonia of a football player isn't caused or enhanced by hard work at practice & games is ridiculous.

Howie needs to be on the first bus out. Lurie's gold standard is miser's gold only for the FO apparently

lol @ anyone being surprised by this.  it's not just the eagles, boys and girls.  the nfl is no different from any other multi-billion dollar conglomerate and patterson is no different than any other rank & file worker getting Fed over.

still, cold-blooded doesn't begin to describe these bastards.

So if this is how they choose to act as an organization the eagles should not get upset when we fans call lurie and Roseman cheap, or miserly, or penny pinchers.

Looks like little Howie is Joey Nickels lite.

Howie Roseman appears to be a big piece of ****

With Reid gone, we're not going to attract the higher quality FA's. This front office is a joke.

Yeah, you're right.       We'll never be able to get studs like Asomugha, Babin, Jenkins, and Bell to sign here.       We're done.

Look, I understand your point, but haven't we learned by now that the 'big free agent' way ain't the way to success in the NFL?

Having said that, Roseman doing the draft, even without Reid there to add his 'genius' to the proceedings, is probably not the best recipe either.

Oh, to have a real owner...................

I'm estatic that KOJO posted this topic on the board. Mike Patterson equals pneumonia equals reserve/non-football illness list equals approx. $150,000 lost. This man went thru brain surgery in the early part of the year and yes he lost one millon dollars since it was not football related and the Eagles had the right to not pay him for time lost. The Eagles in-house management has the gall and stupidy to say, without knowing, that Patterson contracted this illness outside of football. This is not a Jason Peter's re-injury which we all know happend outside of football. This is about an organization who doesn't give a damn about a player who has been an Eagle for 8-9 years, battled back from a serious injury to play this year and now the Eagles repay him by this utterly non-caring decision. I hope that not only will Patterson's agent file a grievance but that the powers to be (NFL) will reinstate the lost salary but fine the Eagles a substantial amount of money. Okay, I'm really pi**ed so I will let it go at that.

This brings back bad memories of how the eagles FO treated Hugh Douglas. If you rememnber in the year after the Conf Champ. game with the Bucs, Douglas had a clause thaty said if he reached a certain no.of sacks he would get a $1,000,000 bonus. ( I am not totally sure of all the details, but this the gist of what happened I believe)The eagles asked him and several other players to sit out the last game. Douglas did and AR they would make the bonus up to him somehow because he was 1 sack short of the goal. The next season was a bummer and Hugh became a FA. The difference in contract offers between Eagles and the Jaguars was around a million and  he went to the Jags. It turned out bad for Douglas however. That million dolars difference could have been absorbed by the Eagles in a show of gratitude for sitting out the last game of the previous season and not reaching his well deserved bonus.  The worst part was that it left a void at DE and the eagles went and reached by picking McDougle as the first roiund pick, which became a total fiasco and waste of a pick.
These scenarios with players like Staley, Trotter, Owens and dawkins have shown that the Eagles FO is NOT faithful to the players and it affected the locker room.

For Lurie's defense, does the current ownership charge players for socks?  Norman Braman was the most Silas Stingy owner the Eagles EVER had!

OTOH, this really makes Lurie look petty.  After watching a brilliant documentary on NFL Network about Eddie DeBartolo, I now know why the Niners won five Super Bowls.  This is NOT an Eddie DeBartolo move.  When you think about it, this keeps the Battered Reid Syndrome fans alive believing Reid is coming back to finish his contract. Mike Patterson could've DIED at Lehigh 2011!!!  Now you dump him like trash because of another setback.   Eddie DeBartelo would've taken care of Mike Patterson for LIFE after football.  That's why the Niners have FIVE Superbowl Championships!!! Why can't the Eagles get an owner like Jack Kent Cooke?  Actually Cooke was Jewish acting like a WASP.  Wow, do the Redskins miss that man!!!   Now the Redskins have an owner who couldn't lick Jack Kent Cooke's shoes, yet share the same religion.   I want an American mogul who owns malls acrosss America,  Italian Catholic, and owns the Eagles.  Eddie, Philly needs you!

Never did I say we need to fix/build the team through Free Agency, but you do have to fill a few holes that way. I'm right there with you that bringing in these free agents was a major reason why we have piss poor play. They got their money,  no reason to push to the ceiling. Poor drafts by the front office forced this direction.

With that said, millions and millions were thrown at these guys who underperformed and now we're squabbling over 150k with a vet who has been here for a long time and been a above average steady contributor. Boy, when it's bad, it's bad... This front office

They will have no problem signing any free agents.  Free agents follow the money.

However, they embarrass themselves, frustrate the players, and draw the ire of the fans when they make ridiculous decisions like this.  Howie is a joke and complete fraud, obviously.  No one could dispute that based on his incredibly thin resume and dreadful (perhaps worst in all of football) tenure as GM.

Now he's actively embarrassing himself and the organization for relative pennies.

Time to fire another PR guy, Lurie.  The PR team is the problem, right?

Well, we should probably get used to Roseman, because he's our personnel guy going forward.   (Deal with it, Pocono ;) )

It's funny that so many people have commented over the last several years how lucky we are to have an owner like Lurie, and not a Braman. You can have both of them, as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed, but at this point I believe it's a fait accompli.

If ever a franchise needed a completely fresh start, it's this one.     It had to be a total housecleaning followed by fumigation before proceeding, but sadly, it probably is not to be.

At this point, dumping Reid will have to do, and is still a huge step that needs to be taken.

Didn't they fire Joe Banner ?  Didn't Howie try to put a friendly face on the franchise when he was handing out cash to everyone so there wouldn't be any drama in Training Camp ?
I guess a losing record changes things dramatically.   I know this is a business but dang...penny wise and pound foolish

At this point MJ, the writing is on the wall......and it doesn't matter. I'd prefer it if the owner was committed to championship football, but if he's not, that's fine too. It won't be the first time Iv'e watched an exercise in futility.

Nice job by Phil Sheriden

Joe is gone but the Eagles are having another Banner year !!

Jenkins signed as a free agent two offseasons ago. He accepted the Eagles' offer over other possible contracts. To slash his salary in the second year is to announce to all future free agents that your word is absolutely worthless.

Is that kind of long-term consequence worth saving a few bucks? Evidently it is to the Eagles.

Patterson collapsed in the middle of a training-camp practice in 2011. The diagnosis was an arteriovenous malformation in his brain. The condition can be fatal, but Patterson postponed surgery until the offseason so he could play last year.

His reward so far has been nothing short of abusive. This bit of nastiness will save the Eagles all of $150,000. It was not worth it.
