You said on "Live" that Vick will not be back, and you've been hinting at a 3-4 defense. And yes, I know, you're just (cough) speculating (cough). So I guess my question is....shouldn't the next coach be given the opportunity to make these calls? I mean I'm not as down on Howie as some people, but whoa brother. I don't see anyone in the front office with the stripes to do anything but interview people who ARE competent enough to make these decisions, dig?

Howie and Jeff are in over their head.

Getting Reid out of here is the easy part. Developing a succession plan and chain of command after he leaves will be the part that could get ugly without the right expertise and outside influence.

Maybe they already have a deal with a new coach and he's just waiting until after the Fiesta Bowl to announce it.  Or maybe Dave threw his hat in the ring to be head coach and is feeling good about his chances.

Pretty obvious Vick is not here with 3 million due in Feb, There are some Asst coaches that will go 3-4 (Horton, Moss possibly, 49'ers DL coach,.........)

Perhaps Howie has already picked the DC before he has picked the coach.  Or perhaps Howie is going to be the next DC and that is the scheme he intends to run.

That wouldn't explain the 3-4.

I wonder how our current DL and LBs would fit into a 3-4 scheme.

Thank you for hanging on every word, but the truth is that I have no idea what's going to happen. We're having conversation for the show, that's all. Don't read too much into it. I'm not privvy to the decisions that are going to be made, not at this point, anyway

I hope we're not going 3-4. It plays against most of our front 7's strengths. Meco wasn't as good in the 3-4 in Houston last year. Kendricks is too small for a 3-4 OLB. Cole probably wouldn't work at LB and is too small for DE. Hunt and Curry wouldn't fit. Cox and Jenkins are pretty much the only two fits.

It's all conjecture, but I think 3-4 is the way to go.  I think it gives you more options to attack the modern offense, let's you get away with less talent, and it's easier to find edge rushers in the draft, since the run responsibilities aren't as much of a consideration and hybrid/edge rusher are more plentiful.  You're correct that it doesn't match up perfectly with the personnel the Eagles have, but we have to remind ourselves that if the personnel was so great, they wouldn't be in the process of rebuilding the entire organization over the next few months.

The 3-4 is just the latest fad, its not any more effective than any other scheme. It all comes down to execution. Its actually not as easy to find 3-4 edge rushers as some would believe, as most of it come draft time is all projection and most of the time that projection is wrong. Draft pundits try to project defensive ends and linebackers all the time into a 3-4 pass rusher and more often or not they've been wrong. I just want a legit defensive coordinator and whatever scheme he wants to implement is good with me, whether its 4-3, 3-4, 46, or anything else.

Only Jenkins has 3-4 Exp, Cox, "perhaps ?" at DE, that's it

How did the Texans and 49'ers do against the Pats recently?, how is GB's 3-4?, how is Wash's 3-4?, how did Buff do 2 years ago with their new 3-4?, Or the Broncos 3-4 when they hired Mcdaniels?, SD's 3-4 as well?, or the Browns 3-4 under Crennel & Mangini?, or the Chiefs under haley and Crennel in their 3-4?

There is really very few teams that play Defense in the NFL now. The 49ers were but couldn't hold a 30 point lead late in the game. The NFL is all about Offense now and a D that can keep the opposing team under 21, like about 17 pts on avg.

Yep, a team may look dominate one game on defense, but week in and week out it's a thing of the past.

Dave can you please get access to some of these meetings and post the information here.  If possible, upload an image of Howie's shortlist of coaching prospects.

Thanks
