Ive been a huge fan of DeSean since we've drafted him, but as I look across our roster, and look at the rosters of successful teams, I dont think you can beat todays NFL defenses with minature speedballs that either have to take the top off....or catch short passes and get the snot knocked out of them only to end up on the sidelines every other weekend.

I think if we are going to keep Maclin/DeSean, we need a big guy with the speed/routes of a #1 receiver with them.  I think it will improve the vision/performance of the QB  and will open up more opportunities for DeSean and the slot...whoever ends up playing it.

I'm not sure I see that guy in this draft, so I definitely think free agency is the place to look. We will have to give him close to Nnamdi money most likely.

I also think its time to be honest about Celek and at least CONSIDER the possibility of a game breaking TE upgrade.  Not that Celek sucks, its just that teams with standout TEs dont have to rely on "big play"  WRs game in game out for a consistent offensive attack (read: Falcons, Patriots, Niners, and arguably the Texans)

Nothing wrong with your point. A big #1 receiver would compliment this offense and only make the team better.

Our WR play this season has left a lot to be desired, but I'd put off even thinking about upgrading that spot until the more glaring issues are addressed.  We've got big problems in the secondary, we need to add depth and at least one new starter to the OL, and we need a SAM LB.

I don't know what true #1 receiver means, everytime I see this discussion I see like 5 names brought up, which means 27 teams don't have true #1 receivers, which means you're talking about franchise receivers not #1 receivers.

The way I see it you can have a #1 receiver like Jackson, but you have to have a #2 recevier that compliments them, Maclin doesn't at all. The skill set is too similar.  Maclin runs very good routes and has good hands, but the guy is made of glass, and so he's not an option inside.

who are "true #1 receivers"

the 5 leading receivers are

calvin johnson 4-10
brandon marshall 8-6
andre johnson 12-2
reggie wayne 9-5
vincent jackson 6-8

chicago are in a horrible dive after a powder puff opening schedule the colts are probably the worst 9-5 team in league history, and the run game and D in Houston are king.

I think the word you're look for is "better, more all-around WR" or even, like someone said, "franchise WR" as opposed to "#1 WR" (a phrase which I admittedly hate and think is one of the most overused on these boards).

That being said, and I'm not sure if these guys are "good" enough to be true "#1" guys, whatever ANY of that means, but they have size and skill... if I'm the FO, I'm doing my homework on guys like Marcus Davis from Virginia Tech (6'4", 232, raw potential?), Jordan Matthews from Vanderbilt (6'3", 200, doesn't have outstanding speed?), and maybe even guys Da'Rick Rogers (6'3", 205, head case?) or Cordarrelle Patterson (6'3", 200, another "potential" guy?), all of whom are generally expected to go between rounds 2 and 4 at this time.

I am not sure we need a so-called true #1 big receiver but your points are basically correct in that we need a clear upgrade at receiver and TE in order to compete in this league. I think we need a slot receiver thou to compliment Jackson and Maclin. Avant is ok but lacks the needed foot speed. I would liek someone comparable to Antonio Brown of Pittsburg. A quick but tougher version of Jackson. Someone around 5-11 195 pounds with toughness and speed/quickness.

As for the TE spot, I think we need a beast. A 6-5 , 6-6 receiver all around player to help score TD's in the redzone. We can wait on the blocking aspect because we have Celek and Harbor. I would also like to see Harbor play more like an H-Back role Hybrid TE/FB.

I love DeSean but he never should have been our #1. He should have been the kick and punt returner and 3rd or 4th wide receiver. He was essentially drafted to take over Pinkston's role of stretching the offense. The only reason he had such success at that role early on compared to Pinkston was because people underestimated his speed. It took at least a full season and a half for teams to realize just how fast he really is (or was) and when that happened it made him just as obsolete as Pinkston ever was.

DeSean, in my opinion, would be a good #2 WR.
Maclin, in my opinion, might be a good #3 WR with more consistency.
A #1 WR would do wonders for the offense but they are hard to find.
I like the idea of adding a productive TE to the mix.  My choice would be Jared Cook.  Big body with speed to stretch the field.  Pair him with Celek and you could have matchup issues for the opposing defense all over the field.

I agree. I know it's Taterific, but I think Dwayne Bowe would be an excellent addition if he's available.  I don't see any TE's in the draft that you could rely on right away, and I'd never draft a WR with where we are in the draft.  He put up great numbers with very mediocre QB play so I wouldn't be too nervous about him producing even on a bad team.  I also think Foles would benefit greatly with the addition of Bowe.

We have needed a true #1 WR since TO left.  And even before that our only other true #1 guy was maybe Irving Fryer.  The Eagles seem to like just getting by when it comes to WR's.  I mean right now we have a solid WR core but no legimate #1 threat that teams are really scared of every week.

With competent QB and offensive line play Maclin and Jackson looked like a great combination.  With exception of a game or two, we haven't had either of those this year.  Given our other needs, I don't want WR to be a priority this offseason. That doesn't mean I'd be opposed to adding a guy with potential in the third round or later, though.

Foles hasn't had that much time with Jackson imo. Maclin gets some great catches but he gets hurt too easily. I wouldn't be opposed to a Fitz or Calvin type WR though

I'm sorry, I have to laugh at people saying that Jackson should be a #4 or #3 wide receiver.  How many teams have 2 wide receivers better than Jackson?  Maybe 2?  How many teams have 1 wide receiver better than Jackson?  Definately not every team.

It's like saying Jay Cutler would make a pretty good backup quarterback.

yeh because larry fitz and calvin johnson have really led their teams to loads of success. Who made the crucial play

wr might be the single most over hyped position in the NFL.

QB is hyped, but that's because it actually is important.

Fitzgerald helped the Cardinals get to the Superbowl and I believe he had a monster game in that SB against the Steelers...

List of top 10 wr's in the nfl heading into this season according to a report I am reading...

1. Calvin Johnson 6-5 240
2. larry fitz 6-3 220
3. wes wlker 5-9 185
4. andre johnson 6-3 230
5. steve smith 5-9 200
6. roddy white 6-0 212
7. victor cruz 6-0 205
8. mike wallace 6-0 200
9. hakeem nicks 6-1 210
10. jordy nelson 6-3 218

Now obviously things have changed through this season so ill add a few that have really steped it up and could/should be top 10..
1. brandon marshall - 6-4 230
2. reggie wayne - 6-0 200
3. vincent jackson - 6-5 230
4. aj green - 6-4 210
5. Denarius Thomas - 6-3 230

Now the average height of those players are 6-2 and the average weight is 216. Leading to the point of....

Desean 5-10 - 175
maclin - 6-0 just under 200

Seems to be a pattern here.....

EDIT: forgot about Julio Jones - 6-4 220

When they had
KURT WARNER
at qb.

While santonio Holmes and Hines ward were the WRs for pittsburgh

and since then, fitz has helped them jack squit, because they don't have the qb play or running game to back him up.

Thanks for proving my point exactly.

You said "Fitzgerald never helped his team to loads of success", i'm pretty sure 1000+ yards and 13 touchdowns in that 2009 SB run qualify as help.

He also had 1,400 yards last year WITHOUT Kurt Warner at qb so what is your point?

Are you saying that one player can carry another 51 players to success?  Because if so can you please show me any team that had only one player carry the entire team.

I would love to have it be Bowe and Jackson on the outside, Maclin and Avant in the slot in 4 WR sets
