Coach search

43 posts in this topic

Dave, first of all Merry Christmas to you and Eagles Nation!!!! I keep hearing about how the Birds are going after Oreagon head coach Chip Kelly. Am I the only one that feels IF we go after a new coach it should NOT be from the college ranks? I mean we are a major market and if you look at the last couple of big market teams that have gone that rout, it has not been pretty. IF we go after a coach it should be a proven NFL winner. I will always be thankful for the awesome seasons under Big Red, even though we still have no rings to show for them. And can you tell me why it would not be wise to bring in B-Dawk as a defense coach? His presense alone would elevate the intensitity of our Defense. He would be on the feild in practice without pads showing how to hit!!!

Being successful in college does NOT mean a thing in the NFL. I think he would tank, especially in Philly!

Will he just be another coach with a very narrow scheme? Like the June Jones run and gun...or the Andy Reid vertical west coast offense? I don't know....I just want a traditional, balanced attack on offense.

The hardest thing to do is find a franchise QB. If you believe that Foles could be the guy, then hiring Kelly would be a mistake unless he adjusts his system to fit Foles' ability. I don't think we can base our future on a 33 year old Mike Vick to play in Chip Kelly's system which relies heavily on speed at every position. I would much rather have the Eagles hire a coordinator like a Jay Gruden or Bruce Arians...someone with at least some NFL experience. Both of those guys I mention have experience developing QBs, so they would be ideal for working with Foles or another young QB. If the Eagles hire Kelly, then it will tell me that Roseman had most of the say in the search.

Kelly's success will be based on how his version of the spread offense fares in the NFL. Carolina and Cam Newton might be a smart bet.

With all the HC vacancies, the Eagles may have a hard time landing their top choice(s).

The two guys I'd loved to see interviewed are Bruce Arians and Bill O'Brien.

I've seen enough goofy offense here in 14 years to last 100 lifetimes.

I agree with you completely about Bill O'Brien. Have you changed your stance on preferring a more defensive minded coach or just floating a few offensive guys ? I would be shocked if Arians is on the Eagles short list and I am surprised you would would have any interest in him. I think Arians would be a terrible hire. Am I missing something ?

It will be interesting to see what happens if both the Eagles and Browns are interested (as reported) in hiring O'Brien.

Bruce Arians is garbage. He almost got Roethlisberger killed. I read that O'Brian already committed to Penn State.

Could the Eagles lure Saban away from 'Bama? Should they try?

How about the guy at Stanford?

How about a defensive guy like Trgovac?

I don't know what's best but I'm excited that the conversations are finally happening.

Shaw just got a new deal.

I would imagine that Dave and the missus will be breaking open some bubbly when Andy is officially gone. I'm sure that Dave is sick of defending the boneheaded playcalling over the last several years, especially the lack of the running game and poor execution in the red zone.

That's OK KOJO, I was secretly hoping for him, but one thing I know is, they'll find another guy.

Yeah, in a way - just get a solid guy, that's all. As long as good, solid coordinators are brought in, I'm fine with it.

Arians showed he can handle the top job this year, and despite what HB says, Roethlisberger loved him.

That didn't make him a good offensive coordinator. He was fired for a reason.

He had plenty of talent to work with and a solid defense to support him yet in his 5 years calling plays the offense never finished in the top 1/3 of the NFL in points. Many Pitt fans were thrilled to see him go.

Fine.

The fact that we're even discussing this for real is enough for me. :towel:

I barely watch college football but can you (or anyone else) explain why Bill O Brien would be a good pick?

He was the Patriots OC previously right? How did he do in his one year at Pedo State?

I'd prefer a defensive minded coach because I feel like we need so much on defense from attitude toughness and player talent (we have none outside of 1-2 guys) but I'd be ok with anyone who is competent enough to realize their own limitations and hires a great defensive staff.

A good DC can do that as well, badmeets. Remember JJ?

Bruce Arians is garbage.

Correction, HB. 'Garbage' is what has resided here for the last eight years.

Arians was a disaster as HC at Temple.

I realize that was a long time ago and a different game, but to the people in this city with a long memory, he would be a tough sell from a PR perspective right out the gate

He got fired because scoring lots of points through the passing game isn't "The Steeler Way." How'd that work out?

But, Lurie isn't going to hire a 70-year-old, nor should he.

You should check your facts. The Steelers didn't finish in the top 1/3 of the NFL in scoring during the 5 years Arians called plays despite having plenty of talent and a solid defense.
