Starting from the 70's, the first successful hire was D Vermeil.  He was a young upstart in his 30's and his UCLA Bruins just came off an upset SB win.  Tose, in dramatic fashion, went to the West Coast and scooped up his new prize head coach in a helicopter for what was drama at the time.

In the 80's, Norman Braman was finishing his first year of ownership of the team - which was in the doldrums for several years under Marion Campbell.  Da Bears just finished their amazing 15-1 dominant season, and Buddy Ryan's defense was the talk of the NFL.  Before the Super Bowl, Braman, like a bull in a china shop, goes to Ryan and snags him to be the new head coach of the team.  The team threw out some misinformation about being interested in David Shula.

During the late 90's, Ray Rhodes' Eagles imploded.  The front office of the team included VP of Player Personnel Tom Modrak and Pres. Joe Banner. Modrak wanted to hire his buddy from Pgh Jim Haslett.  But Reid blew everybody away with his plan and manual to run a NFL football operation.  The front office overruled Modrak and went with Banner's choice.

Right now, the first two situations apply to the present day Eagles more than does the last one.  Lurie really is the ultimate decision maker here - he doesn't have a committee the way he did 14 years ago.  If the team's pursuit of Chip Kelly is true, then we shouldn't be reading about it in the news, and its a slip up on the part of the organization.  Otherwise, great subterfuge ala the Buddy Ryan hire if somebody else is on the radar.

When has anybody known the Eagles to let information get out before it's time? All this talk of Chip Kelly is speculation on some reporter's part or somebody tossing their opinion out there and passing it off as an actual report. Once something like this gets out there people run with it and they try to connect the dots. The Eagles are more than likely gonna hire somebody that we're probably not even talking about or some under the radar candidate.

100% agree. i said in another thread that the media has already tabbed kelly as the new HC so its almost guaranteed that it will be someone else out of the blue.
