This was pretty shocking. They were 7-1 and missed the playoffs, but you have to give him some credit for going 7-1 in the first place.

Also, a 10 win coach gone? Guess the GM Emery really wanted to bring in his own guy.

Yeah, apparently he wanted Lovie gone last year, but the owner wouldn't let him pull the trigger.

By far the most surprising firing of the day so far. I think the job he did two years ago in getting Chicago to the NFC Championship Game and keeping it close after losing Cutler at halftime is often overlooked.

Of course, that was two years ago...what has he done for them lately?

I am surprised that he was fired. But I guess not to many owners would be happy with their teams starting the season 7-1 the last two seasons and missing the playoffs all together.

I like defensive mided coaches so I wouldn't mind seeing him help the eagles through their construction project.

This is the second year this has happened. Last year they started 7-1 and Cutler was out.

Cutler was out for about 6 weeks during the second half of the season during a critical stretch and they were not able to bounce back from it and missed the playoffs. I know this year Cutler was out about 2-3 games, but I don't know what happened in the rest of the games that they lost with him in there. They went on a bit of a losing streak to end the season.

Their defense was never an issue so it kind of didn't make sense for them to bring in a defensive mided head coach.

What was the bears before him? ....took them to the superbowl with rex grossman as QB hahahahaha.......imagine if he had a real QB.....he has overrated jay cutler as QB and still went to the nfc championship in 2010......he never had a good QB in chicago that was what doomed him....

What were the Bears with him? They went to a Superbowl and lost, and didn't do all that much else. They weren't terrible, but weren't great either. They had some of the worst offenses under Smith and they needed a new coach to come in there and get the most out of their talent. Cutler is overrated, but he is top half in the NFL, Brandon Marshall is a stud, Forte is a stud, they have some nice role WRs as well and had one of the most dynamic return men in NFL history and a great kicker. Oh and strong defenses throughout most.

7-1 start this year and no playoffs. That's life. The team collapsed.

He had similar issues as Reid did these last few years.  He couldn't get a coordinator to fix the the 1/2 of the team he wasn't the expert in.
