He was on The Herd today.  He was asked about his time in the NFL and he basically said he likes the college game better.  For the reason that he can coach for 5 months then recruit for another month then go travel or golf.

And thats a key point.  The guy isnt obsessed.  I think a key quality in a coach in the NFL is that he has to be a little obsessed with his craft.  He has to live and breath football.  Chip Kelly seems like that type of guy.  I hate his college offense.  But he has that important quality.  Being obsessive and being a leader of men IMO are the two most important qualities in a head coach.

Yes, ge99 brought that up. Spurrier is not a hard worker. Kelly always has been. In that way they are very different

Thats actually why he failed in the NFL, not because he was a "gimmick coach" as some seem to think.  He just doesnt have the desire to sit in a dark room with a remote his entire life.

Spurrier admitted that he wasn't cut out for the NFL. That's all it is. Really coaching in general isn't a 5 or 6 month job. I think the best coaches around are willing to put the extra time in to improve not only the teams but themselves and it shows (now) Spurrier's not willing to do that. It makes you wonder back to his playing days if he was willing to put extra time in then.

Ah I think it is a combination of both, good head coaches bury themselves with the workload and as a coach you also have to have the smarts to coach in the NFL and be successful. From June-December its 100% football, games, camp, preseason and getting the boys prepared. And from January to May you are getting ready for the Senior Bowl, Combine, Draft, OTA's, Rookie Symposium etc......HC'ing to me is a full 10-11 month job with maybe one month to spare.

Sounds like to me Spurrier doesn't like to bury himself with work and he knows he cannot make it in the NFL.

How about college coaches have a relatively financially poor and captive audience who must do as they are told or else, unlike the pros which are made up of mostly millionaires who can tell a coach to "f" off. THAT is the difference betweem college and pro's.

Perhaps, but those who "tell a coach to "f" off" aren't millionaires for very long it seems.  T.O.  and Ocho come immediately to mind.
