I wasn't directing my comment at anyone specific (i.e. Cowher and Gruden) - it was more about the process (looking more intently at coaches from the college level, thinking they'll outsmart everyone else and land the next gem).  Who knows ... maybe it works.  I don't necessarily buy into the idea that a new HC has a much higher chance at success at this level if he has previous NFL coaching experience - I think a good HC is a good HC, regardless of where he comes from.  It just seems to be more of a focus for them than I've seen from other teams (at least what is reported, other teams linked to college coaches are usually linked to only 1-2 candidates - who knows what goes on behind the scenes).

My point is simply that it makes sense that they should talk to everyone, but why haven't they talked to Gruden or Cowher yet, if they are in fact talking to everyone.

By my count, they have talked to only 3 college coaches.  Not really that many, especially considering O'Brien's resume.  Is he really a "college" coach, or an NFL coach who's now coaching at the college level?  Of the true "college" coaches, they have talked to two.  Again, I don't have a problem with them interviewing everyone.  Just why not everyone?

Because the media wants you to think teams are interested in Cowher or Gruden so they have something juicy to write about.  Fact is nobody is interested in them, and I really dont think either is interested in coaching.  According to an atticle I read one Browns suit went out of his way to make it known they have no interest in Cowher or Gruden.

In the NFL I get the impression Gruden isnt an easy guy to work for and theres alot of doubt about his credability with that Tampa team he won the super bowl with.  Its not just the fans that see it was Dungy's team.

In addition both have cushy TV jobs where they can work 1 day a week and spend the other 6 on the golf course or doing whatever it is that interests them.  Why would either want to give that up to win another super bowl?  Both are still involved in the game its not like like they were living quietly on their 100 acre ranch for the last 5 years away from the game.  I think both guys like the attention Gruden especially so of course he's not going to come out and say he doesnt want to coach anymore.  Cowher has at least said he'd like to return to coaching  but not for another 4 or 5 years.

There have been reports of interest in at least 4 candidates:  Marrone, both Kellys, and O'Brien.

There is a reason why Jon Gruden hasn't been hired yet despite the fact that he has declared for several years now that he is ready to go back to coaching "for the right team".

"Reports" mean nothing.  They never interviewed Marrone, so there is no proof of interest.  Remember there were reports of Andy Reid being "close" to a deal with Arizona, but never even interviewed with them.  Chip Kelly was "close" to being the Browns coach, then close the Eagles coach, then went back to Oregon.  Unless an actual interview happened, I don't believe "reports" this time of year.   Too much posturing going on to believe anything.

Part of my problem with Gruden is that he acts like he should be treated as some coaching elite and that he would only consider certain situations to return.  Look, the guy hasnt coached for 4 seasons now ( Cowher is at 6) and he didnt go out well.  So stop acting like you are something special and waiting for the phone to vibrate.  Front offices are leery of playing tease with a guy whos ego is bigger than his resume.

I'm not a fan of any coach who doesn't know how to use the SHIFT key.  It shows a lack of attention to detail.

One of the best rookie seasons of all time?   You have some low standards.

I saw absoloutely nothing to get excited about in this guy.   Absoloutely nothing.
good for you. check the stats, they say otherwise.

Nice to see that you have to time to share your ego with us Jon.  If you want to coach so bad, stop putting up folks like Jaws to carry your water.  Lobby for a coaching job on your own and convince me and others why after 4 years you are Gods gift to the NFL and belong in Philly or anywhere for that matter.

Gruden doesn't want to become a 21st Century Hank Stram - about whose comeback attempt with the Saints the less said the better.

Can you blame him for that?
