Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is heading toward surgery on his injured right knee.
A high-ranking team source told NFL.com's Jeff Darlington that Griffin will indeed have surgery on his lateral collateral ligament. During that surgery, he'll have his anterior cruciate ligament evaluated by Dr. James Andrews, at which point he'll determine if more surgery is necessary. The surgery is currently scheduled for this week, although an exact time is not yet set.

Lombardi: Adding insult to injury

Posted Image Michael Lombardi says the Redskins must improve FedEx Field's poor surface in the wake of Robert Griffin III's injury. More ...

"They won't know everything until after the surgery," a high-ranking team source told Darlington on Tuesday evening.
Griffin was injured during Washington's 24-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, leading to controversy about whether Griffin should have continued in the game when it became clear his knee wasn't healthy. It's unclear when Griffin tore the LCL, though NFL's Network's Andrea Kremer said Tuesday on "NFL Total Access" that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan believes the injury occurred on Bruce Irvin's sack of Griffin in the fourth quarter.
Griffin exited the game a play later after collapsing to the turf while attempting to collect an errant snap. He originally hurt the knee on Dec. 9, an injury diagnosed as a sprain at the time.

It was clear that Griffin was not in any shape to play that game. You could see that when he was gimping around in the pre-game. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did honestly.

They still don't know yet, they actually have to be in his knee to find out if the ACL was affected.

Maybe not. Here is what rotoworld said about the surgery.
http://www.rotoworld...rgery-wednesday
"Initial tests showed a partial tear of the ACL, but it's still not clear if that is damage from his previous surgery. Griffin had only minor tears and stretching to his LCL in early December; it appears that he indeed suffered a more complete tear in the season-ending loss to the Seahawks. One doctor tells the Washington Post that LCL surgery requires a longer rehab process than ACL surgery, with a recovery timetable that could last 8-12 months. The length of the rehab depends whether the ligament can be repaired or if more extensive reconstruction is required. If RGIII does have an ACL tear, however, it won't necessarily lengthen the rehab."

I don't think they dodged any bullets. He won't be 100% for much of next year. On top of that he's a running QB.

Steve Sommers on WFAN in New York was slamming Shanahan for letting RG III continue in the game. To him, it should have been obvious and Shanahan should have known better.

It may turn out the worst thing that happened to the Redskins was winning a playoff game.

Well I just saw on ESPN they said he has a torn ACL as well but recovery time barring any setbacks is 6-8 months and he could be ready by the opener or expects to be ready by the opener?! Reports are he needs FULL reconstructive knee surgery per ESPN.

They keep saying like 3 different things every day. I think they don't want their fanbase to commit simultaneous suicide as well as tear the roof off of Shanny's house.

But they knew full dudes knee was shot. The owner doesn't take a trip with the player to see a specialist for a second opinion if the first opinions news was promising. Reports were dude couldn't even get dressed inthe locker room or walk for long periods of time without leaning on something.

Shanny's dumb arse is playing with fire. They are looking at AP and he is the EXCEPTION not the rule. Second reconstructive surgery on the same knee? And it's going to take 8 months tops and he expects to play/be ready by the season opener?

I hope they are not trying to rush this kid back. If the has any more issues with that knee, his career is going to be cut really short.

If I were the Redskins I would SLOWLY work RGIII back into the mix. With the beating he took, with how reckless he plays I would hold off until his knee is guaranteed 100%. Of course you have someone like Adrian Peterson coming back early and almost breaking Dickerson's record but this is a franchise QB already on his SECOND knee surgery since 2009. Can't wait to hear how Skins fans now overhype Kirk Cousins who was overhyped after beating Clevaland but funny nobody mentioned how he went 3/10 on Sunday vs. Seattle and had a chance to bring them back but failed.

I wondered what in the world the Redskins were doing drafting a second QB in the 4th round last year. Maybe they ain't so stoopid after all. OTOH if RGIII is gonna be the coverboy for 'Orthopedics today' magazine, is he worth what they gave up for him? Time will tell, I guess.

Shanny ran that dude into the ground. They played him when he had a concussion it comes out now the NFL is planning on filing them for it because they reported it "wasn't that serious" and even put him back in the game. And now this whole knee debacle.

Why would Shanny and Snyder do this to the franchise QB? in his first year?

And why they took him in Round 4 (I would have taken him ahead of Foles in Round 3 myself). Wouldn't be the worst thing for the Redskins if Cousins played well enough that if RGIII after next season is healthy, the Redskins could actually get a first-rounder for Cousins, who should have been taken a lot higher than he was.

Calling Pastor Troy, calling Pastor Troy.......looks like you are already losing your argument that RG3 won't be injury prone. Forget injury prone, he's going to have a short career...sounds like he's blown the same knee twice already at his young age. All those draft picks...yikes.

I do feel for the Skins fans, horrible injury to see him go down especially after the ridiculous year he had. They gave up so much for him though. Will be interesting to see how good Cousins can be though, Redskins will probably struggle without him next year, he's still very young and I do expect him to come back strong just maybe not next year.

Then again, maybe the fact that he has had this injury will stop him from running the ball so much and just standing up straight and throwing the ball. He's always had a reputation of being a QB that can run, not a running QB. Next year will be his time to prove that he is actually a very good QB.

Yep, you're right. Having a knee torn up twice in a handful of years will only make him "much better."

I'm headed off to the sandlot to tear up both my knees right now. If I tear them up enough, perhaps I could have a shot at the NFL since they heal back bigger and better than before!!! $$$ and women baby!!!

You must be slow. No one in here is panicking about your own personal jesus. We're just laughing at how idiotic and comical your organization was to run dude into the ground during his first NFL season.

This is how your franchise handled the new toy.

Played him when he had a serious concussion despite all the injury sanctions there with the NFL. They are currently under investigation and may be fined for that. FACT

Played him and lied about the clearance for him to play by the Dr. who said they never got clearance for him. FACT

Played him in a playoff game where Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder could both see he was clearly injured. FACT

Lied about said injury saying it was a mild sprain, which is why they let him continue and that the MRI's just showed previous damage. Then they come back not even 24 hours later and say he needs reconstructive surgery for his LCL and ACL for the 2nd time in 4 eyars. FACT

Basically your orginzaton ran RG3 like a 16 year old that gets a new car. And destroys it in the first year.

We're not panicking. We're laughing at you. You mortgage the future for a guy and then your boneheaded coaches runs him into the ground during his first year for what? To win the division and lose in the first round?

Nah we're not panicking. We're laughing at you.

exactly.

they should have taken their lumps the first year while RG3 learned a more traditional offense. one that still used his mobility but wasn't so gimmicky it left him exposed to getting blasted 3-4 times a game, now the season is a wasted one, and guess what, with him now being unavailable for all offseason workouts and minicamps...heck probably a good portion of training camp and the preseason games....he won;t be getting the work in needed to do that for next year as well.

looks like it's back to the basement for the skins

6-8 months is unrealistic in my opinion, especially considering the reason why they are in this situation is because they rushed him back the first time. I doubt we will him take the field in 2013, and if the Redskins record starts out shaky in the beginning then there is no reason for RG III to rush back. You cannot rush this back because one more ACL or even MCL injury and this kid is done.

I've talked to 20-30 Skins fans that are all for RG III sitting out in 2013 to ensure he fully heals, and most likely this will be the case. He will not have OTA, Camp or Mini-Camp time in 2013 and that kills you as a sophmore in the NFL, you need all of the time you can get. Granted RG III is smart and talented but he still has much to learn and missing an entire season only sets him back further.

Sucks to be a Redskins fan.
