If Howie can't prove effective in bringing in talent to fit his system, the team will not reach its goals.
But to sit here today compared to one month ago, its pretty exciting.

I truthfully haven't been this excited since the SB.

It's as if Lurie looked at every aspect of what Reid was about and said to Howie and Don "OK, I want the antithesis of that". Well, he got it.
I know it's only the introductory PC, and all the right things were said, but you'd have to be unconscious not to be fired up as an Eagles fan right now.
It's been a really long time coming, but man, I can't wait for what the off season will bring. A really long time.

I'm happy to have Chip Kelly captain the rebuild, but I also don't expect big things in year 1, not even close. I think he made it pretty clear he's not in this to turn it around for 2013, he's here to build a winner. This is a true "build from scratch" hire. That's rare these days...most coaches are hired to provide some measure of improvement in year 1....whether it's to put a team like the Bears over the top or to provide at least a little life for a dying franchise (Jax/Buff). 2013 is going to be Kelly's year in the lab. Don't expect much more.

I don't think anyone here is under any illusions that this is a 'quick fix', or is even looking for that given the mess that Reid left. A primary reason I wanted no part of any retreads, including (maybe especially) guys like Gruden and Cowher was that they would be much more likely to take that approach and set us back even further.
Lurie specifically wanted this treated as a long term solution, which is probably why Kelly (and O'Brien) seemed like attractive candidates. He wants to replicate the way Reid originally built this thing into a perennial contender, but is clearly cognizant of Reid's weaknesses, which became more the rule as time went on. From the tone of his comments before starting the coaching search to his comments introducing Kelly, it is clear that in many ways Lurie was looking for the "anti-Reid".
Why else would there be so many references to accountability, avoiding the 'square peg / round hole' syndrome, playing to the strengths of your talent, the team aspect of decision making, etc., etc. There is no doubt he was looking to go in an entirely different direction.
As far as Kelly valuing the passing game like Reid - have you listened to him, or read about him? He is about attacking the defense where it is vulnerable with whatever will get the job done, be it on the ground or through the air. That is the direct antithesis of Reid's arrogant approach of doing it his way regardless of what the defense presents. The two couldn't be more starkly different in how they want to attack a defense.

Gus seemed like he was the guy to line the team up and whoop the guy lining up against you.
Chip seems like the guy who is going to out scheme you.
Either system can work.

My last point of being excited was during the Garcia games in 2006, when it seemed that Reid had taken the last part of the year off - the Cowboy Christmas game was incredible, but the best was the Giants playoff game. Had to be the only time in the last decade and a half where we actually took three knees before kicking the winning FG, the clock management was so good.
I still believe that was our best shot at a SB aside from '02 and '04 - I still think about that idiotic screen pass to Tapeh in the Saint game that cost us a TD and probably the game. The one call in the Garcia run that I would credit to Reid.
2008 was just a matter of waiting for Reid to be Reid, and he didn't 'disappoint'.

Yeah we lost but at that time in that moment it was the greatest moment after 3 straight years of frustration. And truthfully I bought into TO being reformed, the problems he had with SF not carrying over to Philly, and even though we lost I thought we would be back to contend right next year.
It was that run and then the completely unexpected run in 08 that had me last super excited. I never thought we would beat the Giants and then when we did I never thought we would lose to the Cardinals. And considering the matchup against the Steelers that might have been a good matchup for the way our team was constructed at the time. The Giants game with the Vick comeback was also awesome. No one at work wanted to talk to me (live in NYC) and I had a huge grin the whole time.
EDIT: Hopefully those great moments come back sooner than later and obviously with much better results.
