“We removed ourselves from the process. We really liked Chip. He’s intriguing, a very different thinker, and very smart. But you could see he was uncertain what he wanted to do. He may be in Philadelphia 10 years or longer and have a terrific career. But the fact he committed to Tampa Bay last year, backed out, then seemed all year to be leaning toward going to the NFL, then being so uncertain with us, we just felt it was too big a gamble. If there was no ambivalence, we may have offered him the job.”

sounds like something somebody would say after he felt spurned.  Who says Chip wanted the Cleveland job anyway?

as much as it sounds like a spurned lover, It is 100% correct, and probably the smart thing to do...
What happens if he finds the NFL to be too hard for him?
What if a big college HC spot opens?  You don't think he will be thinking about that?
If he wavers 1 ioda on being the eagles HC, then that is all you need to know that he is not the right man for the job.
Oh wait... he alreeady did waver on the job offer.

IOW, Banner knew Chip had legit interest in coming to the NFL but sensed he really didn't want to be with the Browns, so he is spinning it as if they pulled out ... just to avoid being turned down.  Ego.

So glad this guy isn't anywhere near the Eagles anymore. He can take his salary cap championships, spreadsheets, and adding machines and cram them up his hairy chimphole.

If I went on a job interview and saw Banner across the table I would be ambivalent too.

I dont think Banner cared about all that when he was in hot pursuit of him.  I think he's spurned because he wanted him, then he hired Chudzinski.... only to find out Kelly still was interested in the NFL.

Who cares? It's the Browns.

Firstly, who wants to live in Cleveland?

Because the guy seemed serious about being in the nfl and he did not turn anyone down at that point.  The Browns, like the eagles thought he was going back to oregon, when he said he was going back to oregon.  Both teams moved on with their coach searches and the browns hired somebody and the eagles did not.  A week later, Howie was told to contact Chip again to see if he wanted to to coach in the nfl and at that point he said yes.  The browns already had their man and I don't think he would have went to the browns anyway, but the questions remain.  When the going gets tough is kelly going to go back to a college atmosphere?

I agree with Banner, Chip was way too much of a risk, could have ruined all that talent they have on the Browns.

The dude is a risk.  He doesn't need any clause in his contract to want out of the nfl.  If the guy does not want to be a nfl coach after one or two years then you are screwed for another 4,5,6 years.  You can't force him to coach if he is not in it 100% and loving it.

That's how big markets are. The New York media isn't any nicer, nor is the media in Dallas.

I understand and that is a sad state of affairs.  It's not about being nice, it's about not being a D and asking stupid a** questions.  THere are only maybe 2 or 3 out of 20 beat writers that get it and understand how things work and do not ask asinine questions.

I don't get it. Are you applauding the Browns here?  Chip most definitely would rather come to Philadelphia over Cleveland.  Joe Banner was in hot pursuit of him, and decided to hire Chudzinski... ...admittedly after Kelly "decided to stay at Oregon"... Chip's reasonings seem legit for not wanting to leave Oregon hanging without discussing with his team and family first.  But who knows how true that is.

Could you imagine if it was opposite and the Eagles hired that bum and Kelly came back AFTER saying he was staying at Oregon to coach the Browns? TATERGEDDON!!!

I am not applauding the browns.  I am saying there is a hugh risk in hiring kelly.  The events did not happen like you imagine them.  Please re-read the post you are replying to to see how the events transpired.

Joe did everything but give him a hand job.  They camped out in Az for a whole week to get to Kelly first.  If he thought any of this they wouldn't have wasted their time.

A risk of going back to college where he had a lot of success, and knows he can do it again if the NFL is too hard, not what he thought it would be, basically loses???  Besides Chip Kelly???  Can't name that many.

OKay so we should all be sad because Kelly is a risk.  Newsflash- Every coach hiring is a risk.  SF took a risk with Harbaugh, paid off, Ravens took a risk with a Special Teams Coordinator, paid off...

I'm sure we're all more comfortable with Kelly and the risks than Chudzinski

I did edit my post as you were replying... They hired chud after kelly "decided to stay".  In reality, I think banner knew regardless, he was going to Philly over Cleveland if he chose the NFL. They were so quick to hire someone, while the Eagles interviewed everyone, and it paid off.

Truthfully you don't know what you are talking about.  I bet you didn't think the redskins would have won the NFCE either...  Chudzinski will not be running back to college if they start losing.

That's cause he will be getting Fired instead of "running back to college", moron.   I don't think anybody thought Washington was going to win the NFC East, but no not really surprised due to the ineptitude of the other teams in the division.  So while you spend all offseason crying about Chip Kelly "running back to college" before it even happens, I'll be enjoying the fact that my favorite football team is headed in an exciting new direction for the time being.

Who cares if Chudzinski wouldn't run back to college if they start losing? You're probably better off to have a guy bolt than to wait out 3 years of a mediocre coach before moving on.

Other than the Saban 1-yr scenario it doesn't really matter. A bad hire is risk wherever the guy comes from. And really most coaches are bad hires
