Feathers, the real problem was that Washburn runs only ONE defensve line technique and its the wide 9.  It's not a surprise that he was brought in by Detroit to be a defensive assistant because they already run that scheme.
Once Washburn was brought in here however, it then became that whoever the new DC was going to be had to make the adjustment to Wash's scheme.  It was a unique situation, not the norm!

Exactly. There aren't many DLine coaches as stubborn as Washburn was when it comes to alignments. I'm sure whoever the DL coach is this time around has experience with 3-4 fronts, 4-3 fronts, etc.

If someone would still hire Todd Bowles after the season he had, someone will hire Gregg Williams.

Some team was very quick to hire Andy Reid as HC

Certainly Reid had a hand in the issues that negatively effected the team in 2011 and 2012. However, his immediate re-hire suggests that those inside the NFL recognize that the Eagles had many more problems than Andy Reid, Mart Mornhinweg and Todd Bowles.

Eh, idk about that. I think Reid got hired as fast as he did simply because the Chiefs suck and they wouldn't mind going 14 years with no SB as long as they made the playoffs. We had more problems than those 3, but they were still very big problems and i'm glad to be rid of them.

>>Feathers: Of the 8 teams that had HC vacancies following the 2012 season...how many elected to hire a collegiate HC as a new hire. Why do you think 7 other teams hired veteran NFL HCs or Sr. Assistant Coaches as replacements?

What extra challenges do you imagine teams believe a Collegiate HC coming to the NFL will encounter? Why do you suppose these team think that a college HC cannot overcome those hurdles?

Be a devils advocate...

Jwood, probably the speed of the game, the difference in physicality and overall football I.Q.  Perhaps it's dealing with grown men and not just college kids. Perhaps it's the increased spotlight and attention from the media. Or it could just be "first year jitters". Who knows?

I, for one, believe that a college coach can easily transition into the NFL. It's not like learning a new language, it's more like driving a new, faster car. I'm hoping Chip doesn't crash

>>Feathers: Me, too. Chip is known as very able and organized. A bit like Reid. That will be a positive. Also, like an early Andy Reid, Kelly's focus is NARROW and very appropriately on his assistants and players. I think Reid deteriorated as a HC as his extraneous responsibilities and authority increased over time. For now, Kelly has the "luxury" of a single job: HC. The Reid early years were characterized by the assistants making young and veteran players better...in later seasons, the recent group of assistant coaches--specifically COORDINATORS--seemed to just wallow along.

Bringing a College Assistant aboard to coach against an NFL assistant...I think is a mismatch in favor of the NFL assistant. There will be a learning curve. Can you honestly imagine that Azzinaro ( Kelly's DL coach) has the same techniques and coaching skills as Tommy Brasher ( Reid's DL coach). Excuse me for being a pessimist, I think Kelly risks surrounding himself with too many DANA BIBLES...good guys who simply need a season or several to get up to speed on what they are seeing in the NFL and how to meet it.

Kelly can be both bright and organized, but if he is playing "college techniques taught by college coaches" against the power and subtly of the NFL and its experienced staff...it will be rough sledding for a season or more.

Gus Bradley's situation in Seattle was obviously going to lead him elsewhere if things went well their D. It is Pete Carrols D. He had to move to make his own reputation. I have my doubts about Bradley. I just can't get it out of my head the bone headed play that lost the game for them. Most of the game they had the tall 6 foot 3  Kam Chancellor covering Gonzales. He was doing a hell of a job. Then on the play that gave Atlanta the field goal opportunity they put the rook lb Wagner on Gonzales. Burned! Atlanta kicks the field goal. Game over. Seaon over. At Gus's highest station on his biggest play he choked. Horrible thought and defensive call. I really believe that the best make the greatest calls in the most crucial clutch times. Now I will give credit that the Falcons have too many weapons and if they are executing properly are impossible to defend. It just seemed like he had a game plan and when everything was on the line he abandoned it. Wagner covering Gonzales his rookie year is a mismatch all day long.
