Sounds like a completely ignorant question. it is. But they talk about with respect to the redskins and seattle offense which seem very different for me.

Also many times during games they talk about the spread formation, is that related to the spread offense.

thanks, del

In the pistol, the QB lines up 4ft behind the C, with the RB behind the qb. It was also known as the Shotgun I. In the regular shotgun, the Qb is 7ft behind the C with no back behind him. I think that's the basic of the pistol formation.

The Spread is a 4-5 WR sets spread out for the most part.

most generic way to explain these without going all wikipedia

(Pistol)The QB doesn't have to drop back and take time going through his 2-5 step drop. All the QB has to do is catch it and swing the ball wherever the RB is going, pass, play action fake, or take it himself.

Also off of the line the QB can read the defense better standing up, and audible, and make pre-snap adjustments.

There's a lot of pressure on the defense to contain the QB, RB, and passing attack.

Spread you just spread out as many fast guys as you can and send them on different routes.

They talk about the Redskins, 49ers, and Seahawks the most because they all have mobile QBs so you have to account for them, while you make sure you defend the other options on the field.

Here's the pistol offense.  Notice the QB is positioned about halfway between under center and a usual shotgun, and the RB is behind him:

read option, RB run
read option, QB run
read option, QB pass

Here's the spread offense.  Besides spreading receivers out to create room, the QB is in shotgun (so he can read a particular defender) and the RB is to the left or right of him.  The QB reads what the uncovered defender is going to do and bases his next decision on that:

To the people hating on the OP for asking a football related question on a football related message board, F off.  OP--Good on you for asking a question and raising a new topic for discussion.  Just ignore the ignorant posts of people acting like know-it-alls, let them go back to calling each other "vicknuthuggers" and all the other inane ranting that the board has descended into.  It's a good question.

I only saw one person hating on the OP. The rest were either answering the question, applauding the OP for asking the question, or talking about people that are hating on the OP..

I could take all day answering this question...the short and easy answer is a spread, spreads out your personnel groups and tries to create mismatches.  The pistol is a formation that puts the QB normally where the FB would be in the I where you attack the DE's and forcethem to make a decision on the fly.  There is a million and 1 things you can do out of either formation.
For example....look at Alabama's pistol O that's a run/pass option offense as opposed to a read option pistol we see with the 9'rs right now.  The spread can either be an all out passing attack or a run based scheme based on isolating certain positions and attacking the weaknesses of certain match ups.  It's a very open ended question.

Some really good stuff here about Chip Kellys offensive principals with the Spread option...

Lots of Video's which go into great detail how and why these principals work

If you are interested in learning it, this is a very good place to go.Start with the Spread Offense tutorial #1 and it will give you the basic premise, and then you can go from there to see how they build on it

But you can run a read option offense without being in the pistol, just have the rb lined up besides the qb not behind him.

For Chip Kelly's offense he calls that the OUtside Zone read.

If this oline doesnt improve from last season, they should never run a read option pass. The QB will get killed.

Alot of this is what we're going to do, now stop us. Sure there's a bit if gimmickry thrown in, but overall he's showing his hand ahead of time, but it's not so confusing that his own damned team can't run it or it takes too damned long to develop. The Anti-Reid offense.

In a way, although I watched the other videos too and they run a “power play” based off the inside zone read look- so from the inside zone look they have the qb keeping it, handing it off to the hb one way, or handing it off to the hb the other.

Don't get me wrong, im glad we got Kelly, but he gets too much credit for his innovations to the spread offense. Mike Leech was doing it (and doing it better) for years with his Air Raid offense at Texas Tech. Too bad Mike Leech didn't care about defense though, lol.
