I hear a lot on these boards that BPA is the best way to go when drafting, what about when you have a pressing need a certain position?

Good think for the Eagles, there is going to be alot of BPA at positions of need.

We need everything except RB so we can just go BPA.

After two years of playing bad I say yes, but is it our draft slot that say so?

Yea I agree we don't need K.I would say our draft slot also helps more with BPA over need.If say we only needed safety you wouldn't take one with the 4th pick in this draft.

Drafting for need only works when that also happens to be the BPA. Here's where Reid should be given more credit for his drafts. He'd constantly postion the spots of the round where he wanted to be to fulfill a need.

An example of just moving around to get a player they want we can look back to this past year. They traded back in the 2nd round with the Packers (51st to the 59th), acquired another 4th round pick and picked up Vinny Curry. They obviously liked Curry, but felt taking him at 51 was a bit too early. They traded back 8 spots where they felt he was good 'value', or the BPA.

The Eagles moved up a few spots for McDougle, Shawn Andrews, Graham and Maclin. I also recall moving down when we traded out of the first round twice. Once was with the Cowboys (Anthony Spencer) and the other was with the Panthers (Jeff Otah).

Anyway, that's a lot of targetted movement up and down. Many of those picks didn't work, but some did. The draft is always a bit of a crap shoot. You trust your scouting and try to do the best you can. When they moved down the BPA wasn't an area of need. When they moved up typically it was and area of need.

Hope that helps.

A good example of drafting for a need is the Dolphins going after Ted Ginn Jr. He was regarded as a late first round prospect and they took him at 9. People were blown away at the reach for what was considered a return specialist who needs work at running routes.

Anyway, the need pick was compounded by their scouting department being wrong. The scouting department will always have some picks that don't turn out. Reaching for that pick because it's a need makes it a head scratcher.

RB definitely on the no need front.  Closely followed by WR on the no really need (unless you want to take a flyer on a bigger guy... I think that will be taken care of with the TE position though).  Kicker and Punter are fine. Long snapper will be fine once they resign Magic Man.  Every other position up for grabs IMO.

Drafting BPA gives you a good team over years of BPA drafting
Otherwise you waste the value of the pick
