>bringit91: those were the days of linebacker roulette. One thing I liked about Kelly's remarks...he seemed to say that he intention was to play to the strengths of his personnel.

I never understood what McD was trying to do with the Mike and other LBs. Bradley was a stud for a season and then was injured--never he same player. Seemed to be that Witherspoon was pretty good...for a game or several. My recollection of Omar Gaither was that  he was not consistent--emblematic of the entire LB corps led by Mike Caldwell. If you can explain more...I'd enjoy having your  the benefit of your thoughts.

>>Shady: Jets are way over the cap in 2013. No way they can keep their guys. Their GM faces major restructuring or trading. Redskins are similarly up and over cap--plus they have the "penalty" for collusion. Birds are about $5MM under the cap in 2013--so out with the old and in with the new.

Browns and Colts are each about $40mil under the cap.

jwood5151......Mcdermott used Gaither the same way that Jim Johson used him.  They would line him up over the center and he would confuse the offense.  He would blitz, drop back in man, zone, or man under on a slot reciever.  The defenses he ran in 07 and 09 before he got hurt were up there with the best in football.  And in 07 the Eagles had the best redzone and 2nd half defense.  Not to mention 1st in TDs allowed and a great run defense.  The linebackers were awesome in 07... all of them...Spikes and Gocong too

I would disagree about Childress. Chili was a pretty good HC IMO.  they got right to the brink with clearly an approach that could have won it all. His very public statements against Favre was his undoing. Favre always the media darling was too big to fail. His body was washed up for his last season. It was obvious to all. Now the HC job comes with how you handle the media and your star players. favre could do no wrong and anything he said must have been spouted from the football gods. Chili is a bit arrogant and this lead to him and favre having the dust up that cost Chili his HC job. Now going through all of this though I think we saw that Chili can lead a team to the promised land(everything but the ring was accomplished). He will challenge his players no matter who it is. Now that is good and bad but to me the true leader has to be the HC. Him taking flack because he challenged what Favre was doing out there when clearly his body couldn't do the job anymore to me equals the kind of leader for a franchise I would look for. I readily admit he is a very bright guy and he maybe let his vanity get in the way a bit. I think his punishment has been extremely harsh and he learned that lesson the hardest way.

Sorry i can't give full credit. But I too have the feelings along the lines of that I think the hybrid type defense leads to being decent at everything dominant at nothing. Being able to keep an offense guessing is the key but my belief is that once you become masterful with your defensive scheme then you cant tweak it. Most any kind of defense can throw curveballs at the O if they can play their base D successfully. Fundamental belief in the NFL season by season to me is that you figure out your weaknesses and have to self scout better than the opposing team can scout you. You are inevitably going to have some weaknesses whatever your scheme O or D. Knowing this and adjusting to compensate or cover for it is the difference in good and great. All this has to be done as a unit. It's not about the individuals as much as having a cohesive unit. When you can get everyone on the same page it's more about doing your job for success. Something we didn't see here this season.

* can tweak it not "can't"

If we are going to change our D to a 3-4 the first pos.to address is nose tackle, not our 1st, but maybe second rd. or at least 3 rd.If Brandon Williams is still there could be the one .without a really good nose tackle its  not going to work, not to mention our other needs DC FS and the rest.Just how i see it .

Actually, I think the only thing that matters in the NFL is being good. Schemes, fronts, reads, gimmicks, adjustments - all nonsense. Chuck Bednarik would still be a star in today's NFL. It begins with heart.

Hey been on and off this website past couple years now. first post though. And all I can say is the revolving door of linebackers is just infuriating.  I think the scouts know how to find talent. I believe the D is very talented. There is just simply no leadership there, in my opinion. You need guys to tie it all together. And the staff (*former staff) never really let anyone build the foundation. Bradley, talented, gone. Witherspoon, talented gone. Ryans, talented, gonna be traded for a couple sixths you'll see. No one gets more than a year to prove themselves it seems. Talking linebacker here of course. And if you're gonna have mediocrity on defense you at least need guys to tie it together. Dhani Jones, Shawn Barber, Keith Adams, it doesnt matter if you've got a couple guys like Dawkins and Trotter, and hell even Sheldon was a fiery guy. But we don't, we need leaders or we need above average linebackers. My first post turned into a rant/me reminiscing and im sorry :) Go Eagles!

Hey Spodeero,......1 simple request, from perhaps your biggest supporter over the years,....me:

When the Superbowl is over on Sunday evening,.....don't come in here 5 minutes after the game is over,.....and post some article that starts off   "Well, the 2012 season is in the books, and the 2013 season has officially begun !!!  We're all 0-0 !!"

Might I suggest some grace period,....a week perhaps,.....before moving on to 2013 ?

A week not only to reflect on the lessons we learned about our OWN team,...but also as a slight show of class to the REST of the NFL world,....considering the season didn't end after OUR last game,....and one team actually did fight through the playoffs, and win the Superbowl.

Maybe show that feat a tad more reverence,.....than sitting there with your finger on the mouse,...just waiting...just waiting...........for that 00:00 to show up on the Superbowl scorebored clock, so you can hit "2013 SEASON OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY !!!!!"

Thanks a lot,....and You Welcome for the advice.

Wood, where do you get Eagles at around $5 million under the cap?  Right now before any of the cuts/trades and restructures they show about $16 mil over.  A few moves can cut a lot of that 2013 salary!

BG, as for DeSean being traded, the Eagles would eat the $8 mil signing bonus vs the 2013 cap, but i'm not sure how the $4 mil in guaranteed salary works?  Either way, I don't see them eating $8mil  where it only saves them around a million compared to keeping him. Don't you think the front office wants to see what Chip can do with him before getting rid of him??  Plus the other team is forced to pick up the salary, which jumps to over $10mil next year.  Thats a tough sell!
