Report: Michael Vick is expected to be released Friday

February 5, 2013

by Paul Jackiewicz

During an appearance on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike in the Morning on Tuesday, ESPN’s John Clayton reported that it looks like the Philadelphia Eagles will release quarterback Michael Vick by Friday.

“It doesn’t sound like they’re going to try to renegoiate his contract and if that’s going to be the case he’ll be released,” said Clayton.  ”Now that doesn’t close the door for him trying to re-sign, but there’s no way they’re going to guarantee him $45.5 million over the next three years.  They still have a few days to reach out, but you kind of get the idea that the fact that Chip Kelly is still not in the position to make the decision on Michael Vick.  He’s sorting out the defensive coordinator position.  He’s sorting out a lot of different things in his coaching staff, and the big decision he’s going to have to make is what he’s going to do at quarterback.  It just doesn’t seem there’s enough time right now for him to be able to keep Vick under the current contract.  So come later this week on Friday it looks like he’ll be released, available to everyone else, including the Philadelphia Eagles.”

When the Eagles do release Vick, I believe the odds are that he’ll re-sign with them since they give him the best chance to start next season.

Reads like total speculation.  I think they'll keep him around for now.  Evaluate him and then try to trade him because I can't see how they'll see anything positive out of the last two seasons of game film.

IF I read that last line right, it means Vick will find out very soon he is NOT wanted as a starter anywhere... and that his best option to start might be philly....

which I still say is about a 1 in a million chance of happening based on all I know about the past three years, Foles, Kelly and the league.

Vick is best suited to be a backup at this point in his career.

That's the reporters personal opinion, not Claytons. Hold on to anything you can though

This sounds good, BUT I caution you that this is the same type of reporting that led to so many incorrect head coaching reports. This is a reporter reporting something that another reporter is reporting as fact...in fact Clayton even says that Kelly is not in a position to make a decision yet. As much as I'd like to see it happen I take this "report" with a grain of salt.

Like i said in the other thread about the Clayton report, the Friday timing doesn't make sense. How can you be too busy to sort out the appropriate actions revolving around a $3M contract decision. If two days is all you need to make a decision, why can't you find time to have made it last week so that there's no risk for the $3M payout? Maybe there's more to this than is being reported, but I still don't understand why they'd wait until Friday to cut him if they already made up their minds that they don't want him here for camp to compete for a spot.

I'd love to cabbage patch right there with the rest of you guys at how wrong the umpteen threads and 'reports' were but once again, albeit coming from Clayton, it's still as most sports journalism, based purely on his own speculation. Just because my speculation is in full agreement with this does not equate knowing this will occur. I'll say what I said before, this means the Eagles do not think he's worth $3M and that they feel safe the league won't offer him that(or simply don't care.)
