Like most of TATE, I was puzzed by Chip Kelly's hiring of Billy Davis as our DC. I thought, why on earth would he pick a guy who failed in SF and Arizona to be our DC. Then I figured it out. The general consensus is that Kelly has 3 years to turn this team around. Davis has only been DC for two years in SF and Arizona. Watch what happened...

Billy Davis Rankings for Cards in 2009 and 2010

2009: 14th ranked scoring defense, 20th ranked total defense
2010: 30th ranked scoring defense, 29th ranked total defense

After Billy Davis
2011: 17th Ranked Scoring Defense, 19th ranked total defense
2012: 17th Ranked Scoring Defense, 12th ranked total defense

Billy Davis Rankings for 49ers in 2005 and 2006

2005: 30th ranked scoring defense, 32nd ranked total defense
2006: 32nd ranked scoring defense, 26th ranked total defense

After Billy Davis
2007: 20th Ranked Scoring Defense, 25th ranked total defense
2008: 23rd Ranked Scoring Defense, 13th ranked Total defense

Clearly, Billy Davis is the Precursor to an improved defense. He is the precursor to finding a good DC. Chip Kelly is a genius!

Maybe he hired Billy Davis and plans to keep Vick because he wants the #1 pick to secure the rights to Johnny Manziel???

The master plan is to get a QB with the top pick in the 2014 draft.

The signing of Billy Davis can only mean 1 thing. The guy(s) they really wanted turned them down. They interviewed Davis awhile ago. If they were that impressed they didn't have to wait until after thwe SB to hire him. Guess Philly is not as attractive as they seem to think.

Love how you base that off of pure speculation. Crazy that we managed to land the top "big name" head coach. What makes you think they didn't interview someone they were targetting on the Ravens, and just flat out liked Davis more? You have no idea who they did or didn't interview.

Yeah they took 2 weeks after the Davis interview to hire him because they were competing with other teams for his services. The guy interviewed for the Jets LB coach job. It's a joke.

This guy is a failure so he'll fit right in here in the Roseman regime

Dumbarse they waited until after the Super Bowl to talk to coaches that were in the Super Bowl. San Fran denied their coaches to interview, and only the Eagles and Ravens know if/who the Eagles interviewed from them. Just because they waited doesn't mean they were deadset on actually hiring one of them, genius.

This is deja vu all over again. You DO NOT hire a defensive staff and then hire the DC. Same thing Andy/Howie did hiring wash burn. Then everyone that was decent turned them down and they were left with Juan (who I actually think did a decent job last year). Billy Davis has had 4 years as DC to prove himself. He hasn't shown jack.

Under Davis SF's defense was so bad they got to got to draft Willis the year they fired him.  Under Davis Arizona's defense was so bad they got to draft Patrick Peterson the year they fired him.

Well played Chip.  Well played.  Superbowl 2016!

Look at the actual players he made look good. He even made Chris cogong a serviceable lb when he did not nothing in Philly. He made dequell Jackson a great lb on a very average team w no d line. I feel like he can make the front 7 very strong now the secondary is a different story. He did make drc and rolle pro bowlers and they bolstered themselves to be solid players in the league

He was the most talked about name as head coaching prospect. And so far as I remember, only one other team was interested in him. So it's not like we beat out some of the better teams in the NFL to acquire him. My peference was Mike McCoy or Bradley. I would have even settled for Arians over Kelly.

The better defensive coaches that were available all wanted to become head coaches. Bradley , Arians. So who really was out there other than more collage coaches? . Who apparently didn't want to make the jump to the NFL.  If he is switching to the 3-4,  than I'm sure that has something to do with who they bring in as well.

I personally don't expect much out of this team for the next couple of seasons. They need too many high draft picks to right this sinking ship. They aren't going to get everything they need in one draft.
