I'm not a big believer in the NT position in today's NFL. In my opinion, if you draft Star you draft him to do more than just take up space. I've also grown to be very anti-FA except for certain cases. Like this one.
Knighton's chief problem in the NFL has been his weight. He regularly gets up into the 370s and beyond and it's done a good bit of damage to his NFL career. Chip's big thing is his emphasis on strength and conditioning. Knighton will likely sign a one-year contract wherever he goes and they could probably get him for cheap. Built perfectly to be a NT. Get him down to 330 and watch him thrive.

His weight issues have been out of pure laziness and lack of drive. He also has attitude issues, as his off the field problems would show.
No thank you.

he's not a true nt. just because you're big enough to play a position doesn't mean you can. and Ratliff from dal played nt for years at a high level and he's under 300 lbs. in this case size doesn't matter. I'm sure you're used to hearing that...

Ratliff played a completely different 3-4 under Phillips than with Ryan, hence the drastic dip in production. If you're looking for a true space-eater then Knighton is definitely the guy. On a one-year deal there is absolutely no risk.

NT is the most important guy in a 3-4 D, DE's and OLB's can be found in rd's 2,3,4 and 5.
I don't disagree with the NT being the most important guy in a 3-4.. though I think that point would be debatable with how pass heavy offenses are now days. Not many NT's are going to register more then half the defensive snaps with as many pass rushing sets teams use these days unless they are an elite player.
I also have to say that I believe this class has arguably the best overall group of NT's of any draft class in recent history, at least at the top of the class. J. Williams, Hankins, Short (I didn't mention Star because he will likely be a top 5 pick) all could make it to the early second depending on how things fall.

If Knighton would ever commit to staying in shape (which unfortunately is a big IF in his case) he could be a reasonable FA addition although he'd strictly have to be a NT, however if they're going to go the UFA route the 2 guys I'd take over him all day would be:
1. Ropati Pitoitua (KC)
2. Desmond Bryant (Oak)
Both are only 27, big enough to play over the nose and also athletic enough to play DE in a 3-4.
