Oakland Raiders to file relocation papers, will move to Las Vegas

The Oakland Raiders have had one foot out of the door of Oakland for years. But Saturday morning the team confirmed it will file relocation papers to move the franchise to Las Vegas.

The news is expected to be officially announced by the Raiders in the coming days, and was first reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport Saturday morning.

Sources: #Raiders WILL file relocation papers to move from Oakland to Las Vegas. Pending a vote of the owners, the @NFL enters a new world.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 14, 2017

The move will be the third in the franchise’s history, and first out of the state of California.

As for the Raiders possibly re-branding the team’s logo and name, both remain in play.

Raiders owner Mark Davis made it painfully obvious over the last year how unhappy he was with Oakland. It wasn’t until the 2016 season that Davis essentially refused to negotiate with anything the city wanted to present.

Despite their efforts, a source close to Rapoport said that Oakland had indeed made zero headway in putting together a viable plan.

“The city of Oakland has made no progress to keep the team, sources say. It has not come up with a stadium proposal that league or independent sources believe is credible. At this point, it is only a matter of time before they officially leave.”

Davis met with the NFL on Tuesday to discuss relocation plans.

The meeting left NFL vice president Eric Grubman reportedly “impressed,” and Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney Jr. saying Davis would make an announcement soon.

The team has yet to make said official announcement to date, but that’s nothing more than a formality and Rapoport is as solid they come with his reports.

The last hurdle to clear for the Raiders will be a vote by all of the NFL owners. The consensus already seems to be that this too will fall in the Silver and Black’s favor.

Overall, the Raiders will require 24 of 32 votes from league owners in March to see their relocation plan officially approved.

Raiders Wire will continue to monitor and update the situation.

WOW !

Oakland couldn't step up for years then they refused to due anything as for a new stadium, and now they know that Mark Davis has what he wants in Las Vegas.

Now the city of Oakland knows it isn't a bluff, and now are trying to do this and that but Davis had his mind made up already. I kinda hope they leave the name in Oakland in case they do get another team eventually. 2 relocations in a matter of 72hrs

Half of the AFC West will play in new cities this year

Why would any team owner in their right mind choose Oakland over Vegas.  This move will be good for the entire league if it happens.

just like people thought that Jacksonville would be a better place for a team then Baltimore.

Didn't they trademark "Las Vegas Raiders" a while back?

I wouldn't want them to do that, same with the Chargers but more so the Raiders.

They're leaving the city/state but with the Internet and modern TV, the fanbase is much larger than just the 60,000 seats (or however many seats are in Oakland). Plus, I believe that Las Vegas has a large Raiders fanbase there as well. I know that Phoenix and other nearby population centers do.

Yes but, who wants to go to a football game in Vegas? I wouldn't want to. You go to Vegas for all the different things that no one else can offer. They offer nfl football all over the country.

I never heard anybody say that.

Do you know the difference between Vegas and Jacksonville, between Vegas and Oakland, between Vegas and every other city in the U.S.?

People that live in Vegas.  And there are many tourists who would love to see an NFL game while on vacation.

I know several Raiders fans (my oldest brother among them) who have told me that they'll go to Vegas JUST to go to a Raiders game. Having the NFL in Las Vegas will likely add a couple of days to people's planned trips there.

Maybe I'm thinking about it all wrong.... I just don't think it will last. We shall see

I bolded those specific words because people who "go to" Vegas are tourists. Those who already live there, or nearby know they can do all Vegas has to offer just about anytime they want. Why not go to games played there?

Fastest growing economy in the US isn't it? Despite having been around for years it's still growing at a really good rate. So I'm with you, why not have a team in Vegas?

That's a good point as well. However, for the people that live in Vegas do they care about football? With vegas being a 24/7 non stop city( i know most cities are but, i think vegas is in another level with that) do the residents even have time to go to games and get invested in it? Especially for a new team that was never there before.

Hard to say. I imagine any team locating there would have it's share of followers.

I think you will see a ton of fans flying to vegas for games.  It's the perfect excuse to go to vegas.  Go to the game, stay at vegas hotels and casinos.  Sounds fun to me.

My buddy that I'm flying out to vegas with said he would love to go to a game out there too lol. There is so much other stuff to do that isn't offered here in Pennsylvania that going to a game wouldn't be something I'd wanna do I have enough difficulty trying to come up with time and money to see my own team haha. Maybe I'll think differently when I'm out there lol.

I personally CAN NOT WAIT for the first time the Eagles play in VEGAS! That is going to be balls out crazy.  That will become party central, and take over as the largest tailgating place in the NFL.

So, if the Eagles were playing (on the following Sat or Sun) and you could get tickets easily, you would want nothing to do with it?

If they happen to be playing on an already planned trip then sure. I wouldn't want to go to vegas just because of a game though. I'm within 5 hrs of like 10 stadiums so I can already do that. I'm going to vegas to do things I can't do here. That's my point of view on it.

But you're not a Raiders fan, so that's logical that you wouldn't go out of your way for it. As an Eagles fan though, if it was the Las Vegas Eagles, you might feel differently. Like I said, my oldest brother has already told me that he'll definitely go out there for at least one game. His best friend from our childhood neighborhood lives out there, and the two of them haven't seen each other for at least 15 years. Maybe longer. So they've already set plans to meet up out there and go to a Raiders game.

Of course, his friend isn't a Raiders fan, he's a Steelers fan.

Absolutely. The first time they're in Vegas I'm 100% going.
