Eagles fans in NY

Recommended Posts

Yes, believe it or not, a few New Yorkers are smart enough to recognize greatness and support the Eagles as some of their biggest fans!

But surely we can't be the only ones. Can we? Tell us where you are in New York and your "Eagles Story". Maybe we can all hook up and support the Eagles in numbers up here in this so called, "Giants land". lol What jokes they are! :P

There once was, truth be told, a thriving contingent of Eagles fans on Staten Island, particularly on the island's South Shore.

Prior to 1972, all the local team's home games were blacked out, even if the games did sell out. When this occurred, the next-nearest game was usually carried by the network affiliate. This meant that WCBS-TV, Channel 2 in New York, frequently carried Eagles home games - which, ironically, were blacked out from being shown on WCAU, Channel 10, then CBS in Philadelphia! In addition, it was relatively easy to pick up Philadelphia channels from Staten Island (the further south on the island, the better), particularly if one had a decent-sized antenna on the roof.

Thus many households on Staten Island got to watch almost all Eagles games in a given season, and always had access to more Eagles games on TV than Giants (or Jets) games. This resulted in the Eagles gaining a following, including some people (including my own family) attending Eagles games at The Vet - the drive, believe it or not, being only marginally longer in duration than the drive from the South Shore of Staten Island to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx (then the home field of the Giants), because one had to traverse many congested roadways, whereas one could make a relative beeline to Philadelphia via the Jersey Turnpike.
