You have to know how to argue to get what you want. You don't settle for the first person you talk to. You demand to speak to a manager or customer retention specialist or something. You get to the right person, and keep trying, you often get what you want. You can do this with your internet, cell phone, and other bills you have.

good deal ...go for it if you can afford a two year contract ...

This is correct. I just called a couple of weeks ago to cancel, they didn't even try to talk me out of it or offer any deals. I never even received a return call asking why or what they could do to keep me as a customer.

This proves nothing.

Frankly, I don't care all that much what you think it proves or doesn't prove. But it proves that I got a large credit on my bill just before the NFL season started.

Now, if you were a DTV subscriber and if you used their online system to view your bills then you know that the image that I posted is the top portion of the bill. Scrolling down gives a breakdown of what everything is.

You can see here what my credits were for. Not all of the amount shown was for NFL Sunday Ticket and not all of my NFL Sunday Ticket credit is reflected in that amount either. An additional $20 per month was credited to my account for 6 months. So add the amounts together here and then add another $120 to that and that's the total amount they gave me.

Just because they didn't offer you anything to stay doesn't mean that they do that with everyone, like someone else said, you have to know how to talk to them and you have to not accept their first word as their final word.

My guess is that you never spoke to the retention department but only spoke to the first person that answered the phone, which for all you know could have been their first day on the job.

VA's bill credit was completed on the early bird renewal day. Also for the exact ammount of the of St plus the tax.

That's a legit free Sunday ticket credit.

I just find it very amusing that someone would say "That's not true, you didn't get that deal, you're a liar!" lol

Why would I, or anyone else, come on here and say "Call and try to get it for free, I did it and it worked for me..." if it wasn't true? Why lie about that on a message board? What would there be for me to gain? lol

Aside from that, how can it be argued when there is a thread like this EVERY SINGLE SUMMER.... LOL

But hey, the folks that know to call the right peeps and get free/discounted services can live with watching the games....for less.

I've found it to be easier to get what you want by emailing them and not calling but yeah, there is a thread (or 4) every year where this is discussed. I just looked up last years thread and found my old post:

Note the date of the post, then note the date on the attached bill earlier in this thread where DTV gave me a big credit... yeah, I was just making it allll up...

Actually my plan was to wait a week or so then email them threatening to move to Cox or Verizon due to the high price. Their email address for customer service is directvcustomercare@directv.com and I've had some luck going through them when the phone idiots don't cooperate.

Anyway, I sent them an email on Thursday saying I would cancel the Sunday Ticket due to the high price and then later in the email I said that the Ticket was the only reason I had DirecTV to begin with and that Cox and Verizon had mailed me offers that would give me a significant savings to switch to them.

Being the weekend I didn't hear back from them until this morning and they declined to discount it further. So I responded that I would be cancelling DirecTV as soon as Cox (or Verizon) was able to get me hooked up on their service. Keep in mind this is all a bluff on my part, I had no intention to cancel at all.

An hour after I sent that email I followed up with a second one asking for the serial numbers of the leased DVR's that I needed to send back to them so I could prepare to begin packing them up. Again, no intention of doing anything at all just part of my bluff. They emailed back with the serial numbers along with an 800 number and four digit pin number that would connect me directly with a special customer agent to speak to me about the situation.

Basically that 'special agent' works in their 'retention' department and has special privileges that normal agents don't and can do whatever it takes to save accounts. My plan was to call that number and make sure they understood that I didn't want to cancel today but once I had my replacement service installed I'd call to cancel everything through them (again, a bluff). When talking to him I spoke as if cancelling was already a done deal in my mind and I just wanted to make sure they didn't cut me off until I was ready for that to happen.

When all was said and done I got an additional $203.90 credit in exchange for my agreement not to cancel DirecTV. So I have Sunday Ticket and the To Go package at no charge.

Clearly you are making this 100% factual post up...

Truth bombs....you're throwing them :)

I prefer calling only because it's on the spot answers and I'm more effective verbally than in writting. Harder to say no to a voice vice an email... least for me :)

There must have been a major change at DirecTV. They're getting very ballsy of late. The auto-renew trick absolutely will not work.

I'm pretty good at the "I'm going to leave" finagle. For example, a while back I got two new Droid Razrs for $50 bucks out of Verizon. I was about a year from my upgrade period.

I went through this with DirecTV last week. It was the actual truth though. I wasn't trying to scam them. I had been on the phone with them just a few weeks ago and specifically stated that I would not continue with the Sunday Ticket. They still renewed it anyway.

I calmly put to them that this was the second time I had to call in just a matter of weeks and was disappointed in their service. I asked what the termination fee would be if I cancelled. They gave me the amount, offered no type of concern let alone concessions, and asked when I would like to disconnect.

I will most likely call to disconnect service tomorrow due to the Viacom mess they've created.

This is a good thing. Kids spend so much time watching dumb **** instead of cool programming. Like football.

Exactly, I'm hoping this is an opportunity to drop DirectTV with no early termination fees. I need TV to be as much a pain in the arse to watch as possible.

I used to never be able to keep the kids in the house. Always outside building and digging, playing catch and soccer and such. This year we've gotten an Xbox 360, tablets and smartphones and the kids are always asking to play something. Every second of every day. If they can't, they just plop in front of the TV. Drives me nuts.

Like I said earlier, I actually am considering canceling DTV this year, Verizon and Cox both have packages that are better and I get almost all Eagles games locally anyway. If I have to miss watching a game, I still have my NFL Field Pass (Merrill and Mike) and then can watch it at midnight on the NFL Game Rewind or even download the game from TYT.

I have no qualms listening to a game here and there on Field Pass. I miss Merrill and Mike and a couple years ago they took the free feeds offline from the local channels up there. I hated it at first because announcing was split. Now you can select just your favorite team for the whole game.

A switch to Verizon would probably be best. I pray they'll be available down here one day.

Last season, PE.COM had all of the games (Merrill and Mike) posted for free.

Every football forum has the guy who claims he never pays for the ticket as a result of that lame trick. It doesn't work and the guy is a liar. The best you can hope for is that they will give it to you at a reduced rate. The operators need to be aware of this customer scam and not budge when people claim they're going to change providers.

YOUR WRONG IT WORKS.....Hell one year they gave it to me for free and gave me $20 off my montly bill for 6 months now granted I have everything they offer but I never pay for the ticket

Yeah, I actually got more than just ST for free last year too but that guy you quoted seems a little "slow" and I didn't want to confuse him. They threw in the HBO deal and $10 a month off the programming package for 12 months also. They aren't specifically Sunday Ticket related though so I just left them out of the discussion.

I was not aware of this, but I had the Ticket free last year so I guess I neglected radio.

Sorry, they will discount, call back and insist to speak to someone in PROMOTIONS, tell you are a loyal customer and deserve better. Try this first please

I've never been able to get the ticket for free. But I have had them drop $10 off the monthly fee and also extend the months. So you still pay the same (-$10), but the amount per month is much less.

I did get the SuperFan pack for free a couple times though.

The key is talking to retentions. Say cancel service on the first voice when it asks what you are calling about.

They will get you the best deal with the least hassel.
