Fritz Pollard Alliance Urges NFL to Investigate Raiders' Rooney Rule Compliance

Recommended Posts

this rule is pointless and should be seen as offensive . Teams are going to hire who they want. Why force this just to make a team go through the motions . Raiders case , they knew Gruden was who they wanted. If he refused Del Rio would still be HC.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2753545-fritz-pollard-alliance-urges-nfl-to-investigate-raiders-rooney-rule-compliance

The Oakland Raiders hired Jon Gruden to be their new head coach, but they might not have satisfied the Rooney Rule in good faith.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance, which promotes diversity in NFL coaching and executive positions, has called on the NFL to investigate the Raiders' compliance with the Rooney Rule, per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe:

The Fritz Pollard Alliance wants the NFL to investigate the Raiders over its compliance with the Rooney Rule

League rules state you have to interview a minority candidate before making a hire. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, both Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson were interviewed for the job.

The question is whether the team made the decision before the interviews with minority candidates.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Dec. 31 that Gruden was expected to be the team's new coach, replacing the fired Jack Del Rio, per 95.7 The Game. Schefter added the report of the former Monday Night Footballannouncer receiving a 10-year contract worth $100 million on Jan. 5.

The team didn't make its official announcement until Jan. 6 with the press conference coming on Tuesday.

There is also debate whether Martin, an offensive coordinator at USC, or Johnson, the team's tight end coach, were ever serious candidates for the job.

Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman provided his opinion on the team's compliance with league rules:

I'm writing on how the Raiders hiring Gruden is an excellent hire. And it really is.
But they're making a total sham of the Rooney Rule. Everyone knows it. Everyone in the league is talking about it. Total sham.

The Raiders have a history of diversity between current general manager Reggie McKenzie and past head coaches like Hue Jackson and Art Shell, but not taking the Rooney Rule seriously could still come with consequences.

Good, hope they strip the raiders of a few high level draft picks and a ton of money.

Make Prince Valiant Mark Davis open up that check book and fork over some fine money. He should have plenty, seeing how much $ he saves by cutting his hair with a flowbee.

Maybe the Raiders actually did the same thing the Cowboys did the year they fired their terrible coach and almost immediately hired Bill Parcells. At the time, Jerry Jones made a laughably transaparent claim about interviewing Dennis Green also. Apparently they wanted someone "experienced" and needed to decide whether Green or Parcells was the right guy.

So maybe Davis did in fact have a two minute conversation with Green prior to hiring Gruden. Of course the conversation might have been one sided and may have taken place in a cemetery. But still.

The Rooney Rule works! Or maybe it's coincidence and all these minority head coaches would have been hired anyway... Either way there are minority head coaches now than before the rule.

Ironic that the Raiders would be dinged by the rule, since they were the first modern team to hire a black head coach.

or maybe society pulled its head out its butt .... or maybe teams hire who they feel is best candidate  regardless . rooney does not force or reward hiring  , its silly people think it makes a difference this day and age... the nfl is what 68% black ...i wonder what % it would be if you inlude all minorities

This is pretty much the same thing that happened in 2003 with Steve Mariucci and the Lions. Everybody knew who they were going to hire. I guess it would have been nice if they had interviewed an NFL coach from another team instead, if only for the experience interviewing, but it's not like anyone else was ever getting that job.

The one thing I remember about that, was Detroit has several minority candidates they wanted to interview to satisfy the rule, but they turned it down knowing Mooch was their guy.

What can they do if it's found that Raiders did actually violate the rule? Can they void the hire of Gruden? I think it's a dumb rule but is it really a difficulty to just interview a minority? Granted it's kind of an insult if you already know you're going to hire someone else while you're interviewing someone. You're just wasting the persons time

The league fined Matt Millen $200,000.00 in 2003 when he hired Steve Mariucci without interviewing a black man first.

It's a really dumb rule, and kind of insulting to the coaches who know they aren't getting the job but are being interviewed to appease a ridiculous rule just based on the color of their skin.

How about a new rule, each team has to sign at least one white running back to bring in for training camp.

It's kinda like when the Eagles interviewed Duce. They were no way going to promote a running back coach to head coach. They already had rumors after firing chip that they liked Pederson, Gase and possibly Tom Coughlin.

I wonder why N.O.W. isn't demanding an investigation into why there's no women head coaches. They should demand equal representation!

I agree. Duce never had a shot. He was the token interview. If the Raiders interviewed minorities, then they satisfied the rule. As far as I know, the rule only says you have to interview, nothing about needing serious consideration.

The actual issue is if they interviewed someone after they made a decision.  If it can be proven that they agreed to hire Gruden and then interviewed someone afterwards in order to simply comply with the rule, they may not have been in compliance.  They would not have gone through the motions enough, in other words.

What the Raiders should've done is what the Eagles did when they hired their last two head coaches.  Do the token minority interview first and get it out of the way when no decision is made, and ostensibly it appears you are truly looking for a good minority candidate.  (Duce Staley was the token interviewee for the Pederson hire, and some Falcons position coach or something was the token interviewee for the Chip Kelly hire.  To be fair, the Eagles used the interviews to get the minorities' names out there for later interviews.)  If the Raiders didn't figure that out yet, their front office is very stupid.

Personally, I'm against the rule.  How many people of color have been personally denigrated by the rule just to ensure compliance?  The rule essentially requires insulting actual individual minority coaches, for the betterment of a marginal amount of hired minority coaches.

I dunno. It does seem a silly rule. But, it does provide some coaches with interview experience that could help them get a HC job later.

Odd that the Raiders are the ones in the crosshairs. Theyve been out front on minority hires.

If they are found guilty of breaking the rule, its gonna have to be more than a fine though. Davis just forked over 100 m for Gruden, whats another couple mil?

Though in the Giants case, they had an interview scheduled with Hue Jackson (after already complying with the Rooney Rule) except Jackson took the Browns job.  Still say had Jackson took the Giants job instead (apparently the Giants really wanted Jackson), Tom Coughlin is likely HC of the Eagles instead of in Jacksonville running football operations (and likely with Ben McAdoo as OC and Spags as DC).

I was under the impression that the Eagles interviewing Coughlin was merely a courtesy, he being a 2x Super Bowl-winning coach and all.  Coughlin said that something along the lines that he didn't want to coach anymore.

I remember it got WAY more serious than that.  If Jackson had gone to the Giants, McAdoo and Spags were unlikely to have been retained and likely would have been available for Coughlin to bring here.

Coughlin was available to bring here.  Are we talking about the spring/summer 2016 offseason?  I thought that the two sides agreed they weren't for each other, and Coughlin wanted a front office job anyway.

Its a little murky about what was happening. Maybe Coughlin was a legit candidate, but wanted more authority. Or maybe, the Eagles were trying to force the Giants' hand and have them make a quick decision on McAdoo. Or maybe it was just a courtesy thing. All 3 views have been argued, but only the Eagles FO knows for sure.
