The rams are going all in this year but geez, they are going to have a salary cap nightmare after all these guys come out of their rookie contracts....

That's how it works. If you can get your QB while he's in his rookie contract along with a few others, then you have a 2-4 year window to overpay surrounding players.

Then the rookie contracts end and you have the Seattle Seahawks

3 coasts in 3 years.. ship em up to Seattle next year and he'll be a square.

Didn't help that the injuries and age started creeping up on them as well.

I know the Eagles were hoping to be in on a trade for Cooks.

For those of you what-iffers out there that love researching this type of thing I'd love to see the scenario of who we wouldn't have gotten if we traded for Cooks instead of New England.

Of course, we all know how the outcome would have been very different for Cooks. He'd be less concussed with a ring on his finger.

This is all about a Rams team that is going to unveil a stadium for the ages in a year or so than it is about the players.  Just trying to keep the team in the headlines, and doing a job at it.  More of a business - marketing move than a football move if you ask me.

They do have ways they can go but yeah ultimately the cap is there to prevent teams loading up on superstars long term so they are going to have to get creative!

They have some serious talent needing contract after the 2018 season:

Cooks, Gurley, Joyner, Austin, Donald, Peters and Suh will all be free agents.  That's going to be an enormous amount of cap hit if they retain most of those guys.

After the 2019 season, Goff, Talib, Brockers, Zuerlein, and Sullivan are free agents.

If Goff continues to improve, his contract will be huge.....

The Rams are clearly trying to win it all now....because after the 2018 season, they go into cap hell or have to let a lot of talent go.

You know Cooks is going to want a bunch.....Donald will be the highest paid defensive lineman in football,  and Gurley will command $12-14 million. Suh won't resign a one year deal for $14 million if he has a good year.

They have one year before they have to start making huge compromises

The biggest thing for me too is that they are a roster with clear holes. They are pretty woeful at LB and they have no edge rushers. So yeah they have a few big name stars but they have clear holes on that team that are going to be exploited.

How the hell did NE manage to get a 1st round pick from the Rams? WTF

NE trades #32 overall to rent him for a season then trade him for a #26. That's howie type robbery.

Going all in for this year. Gonna be interesting to see how it all works out. This is the NFL not the NBA or mlb and traditionally history says you can't buy a supe. But dammit they are certainly trying.

TBF, they gave a 3rd round pick last year and received a 4th this year. Flattens it out a little

I see what you did there... A bit like Jenkins did to Cooks in the Super Bowl! :D

Sean Payton and Bill Belichick both bailed on this guy in successive years - albeit getting good compensation for him in return.  Not a good look for him in the Super Bowl.

They need two Tackles and more.

But are they looking to move up to get their next QB? With NE you never know...

Are you kidding? Cooks is easily worth the 1st at that position in the draft.

Cooks is absolutely worth a 1...

If you can resign him before he escalates his price in that offense.

You can't re-sign him without paying him top dollar (part of why NE dumped him)

They used their 1st round pick for a 1 year player instead of controlling a new player at low cost for 5 years.

  • Peters gets a 7.3 million raise net year
  • Gurley gets a 7.75 million raise next year
  • Cooks is a free agent.
  • Donald is a free agent
  • Suh is a free agent
  • Lamarcus Joyner is a free agent
  • Rodger Saffold is a free agent.

So I guess they could franchise him in theory, but good luck with that.

This is their attempt at a dream team.

Peters, Suh, and Talib are all scumbags, so the chemistry will be great.

Easily? No

Since coming into the league, that is the production that Cooks has given each team. He's barely used on end-around gadget plays and he doesn't do any PR/KR. He has been accountable for playing every game, but he has had concussions too.

Also keep in mind that within the past two years, his drops has increased as well.

The Rams just happened to be in desperation mode to quickly get to the pot of gold. When NE got Cooks, it made sense that a 1st round pick was the going rate.

Same thing happened with Minny when the Eagles got a 1st rounder for Bradford. Desperate and was simply going off of potential.

Yeah I completely agree with you bud. They desperately wanted to add a deep threat that could be what they hoped Watkins was going to be.

And they've essentially put themselves in a position where they've got to sign him to a long term deal! Otherwise that's an expensive price to pay for a one year rental.

And he’s the only guy other than Antonio Brown to consistently put up 1k yards and  7 tds each those years.

He is not a top 20 WR and Brown is #1, so if 65 yards per game and a TD almost every other week is somehow special then he gets a Cal Ripken Cookie for showing up.

Antonio Brown (4651 yards 31 TDs) makes Pittsburgh a special offense.

Special offenses in New Orleans and New England were glad to get rid of Cooks (3393 yards 24 TDs) for a 1st rounder.

Jordy Nelson has 4 less TDs (20) in that same span and he missed a full year and got Hundley'd this year.
