[News] Early Thinking On Some Roster Battles To Watch

Recommended Posts

Go ahead dallas wait for Bridgewater, Mahomes and Watson to all sign. Franchise Dak. Then let Lamar and the others sign their new contracts also. 30 mil per season is already looking like an old dream for them.

And then that gets me to the whole train of thought about how I’d consider trading Jenkins. Really seems like the wise move. Get something for him while he’s still worth something. And I don’t want to pay him or extend him much more.

Get me a pick and cap relief by trading Jenkins. Then bring in the younger Simmons, Harris(several FA options).... move Maddox and draft a guy.

I agree but not easy to say bye to Jenky. Agree 'cause it could be what is best for team. Football players kinda like dogs - Their years of available service aren't near long enough. 😔

No it's definitely not an easy decision and not one I think is foregone either. We all know this team needs to get younger. Doesn't mean this team needs to cut all players over 30 though.

Wrangler, it just depends on the market. Schwartz is stubborn as he77! If Darby doesn’t find a market he’ll try and get him back. Mills the same. Jones is in that prove it spot. Gotta earn the role and prove durability. I feel like he’s been given plenty of opportunity. I don’t feel bad for him. So many guys are just looking for a shot. Douglas they almost were forced to play out of desperation. He had a few quality moments. But he also got smoked a fair amount. Schwartz just isn’t the best judge of talent. Very quality DC...but personnel just isn’t his area. And he’s stubborn about playing favorites. We’ve seen it play out at corner plenty(go back before any of these guys previously mentioned were even here). We saw it play out with Long at DE. Clearly think Schwartz was the sole problem with bringing back Long. He played at a very high level the year before. Made zero sense not to bring him back. Especially right after the season began with the injuries. But we draft Miller to hold on the 53 instead of Long? How freaking stupid was that? I’ll tell you...moronic!

LOL Look, I have my opinions about Schwartz and I think everyone pretty much knows them by now. Yeah it would be much easier for him to bring back guys like Darby, Mills, Douglas and both safeties Jenkins and McLeod for no other reason than they know the scheme. At this point in time some of these players can teach the new players for Schwartz so he can enjoy easy street but in my opinion if you want to get better as a team, you have to have an honest assessment on these guys and jettison the ones that are not going to improve anymore. Easy for me to say as I haven't formed any kind of relationships with these guys over the years however it isn't going to be any easier  getting rid of some of these guys (Jenkins) even if you kick the can down the road to three years from now. The only difference is that you are prolonging the inevitable at the expense of the other players on your team. Those guys have a shelf life as well and want to be playing their best football with the time they have to play too. It is the coaches job to coach up new players. A good coach enjoys the challenge in doing so. No its not easy but there is no greater reward either watching a young player develop under your guidance to become a great player for your team.  The real danger as a coach in developing new players is not in aiming too high and falling short, but in aiming too low and hitting the mark. The Eagles brought in new coaches in for a reason. Lets get some new players and turn these new coaches loose to do their jobs.

Stine... ok I see where you don't grasp the concept and why #s scare you?

If we trade Alshon pre June 1 ... that creates a cap hit of $16,196 mil       ... that is the amount that counts toward the cap

If we keep him ... his cap hit is 15,446,500  .... that is the cap hit

The difference is $749,500

that is the cost to trade him... you don't combine a dead # plus an active number... you cut him, he has no active cap hit, just the dead money.

A team that would trade for him just gets the salary amount... nothing else    .. $9,910,000     So just under $10 mil... that's it.    That # is guaranteed, but nothing in 2021 is, so the new team would not be on the hook for anything ... neither would Alshon be guaranteed that amount.  That is incentive to negotiate that cap hit down if the team desires.   Very easily there is value to a team without weapons.

I would want to trade him before the draft, so we could get return this year.

Joe, no one is going to give us a player or a pick for Alshon. I am not sure why you think this is possible. Every GM in Football knows we want to unload that contract. So you think they will help us out? Not going to happen.

Read this and maybe you will see what I am talking about....

How many plays did he sit out? I tell you what... he can come play on my team all day.. over the crap that has been the WR position for the Eagles I'm my lifetime... and sit the last play out every game.

The list of Eagles pro bowl WRs over the last 40 years... my guess... might be the same amount Cooper has had in his career?   Again, just a swap Cooper for Alshon, same if not less cap space being used.  In a heartbeat if we get the chance.

I'm curious... how many pro bowl seasons Eagles WRs have had since 1980?   Carmichael, Quick, Fryar, T.O, Desean...  my guess ... a combined 7 maybe 8?  Only because I think Quick and Carmichael have 4 or 5 of them.

Joe, I really think you are the only one that feels this way. I haven't seen one other post anything like. "Let's Sign Cooper" on here. Most feel money better spent on other positions which are not plentiful in the upcoming draft. Why? Because it makes most sense. If you can sign 2-3 starters or Cooper, Why would you not do this? Aren't there other #1 WR's out there in FA that won't cost us? Sure, you say Howie will not let this happen. He will back load contracts. Well, look what happened to Jeffrey contract. We are sitting on a bunch of dead money if we cut him and looks like he will not play at least until week 4. Even if he does play week 4 he won't be near game shape so the first half the year is gone. Probably best thing we can do is send him and a 7th round pick to unload his salary.....

Hi How you doing?  How many people even have a clue what the Eagles are going to do with their first round pick until free agency is over? A lot of folks could be disappointed if the Eagles don't draft a wide receiver with that first pick but you never know until free agency is over. Howie could sign two WR's in free agency or two CB's in free agency all depending on the caliper of player available versus the dollars needed to obtain them. I'm chillin out to free agency gets here. I could just as easily see Rosemen signing any two of these three receivers Demarcus Robinson 25, Robby Anderson 26 or Perriman 26 if the price is right and drafting safeties and corners in the draft. The only thing I feel confident about this year is that they won't take an o-linemen in the first round. LOL

Even if we snagged two WRs in FA would not shy away from taking a WR in the 1st in this draft....We need to completely rebuild our WR core. Even if we have Alshon and Djax this season great chance both are gone by next year(believe we find a way to move Alshon this year)....Getting a Robinson, Allison, Perriman, Anderson(any of those 2) draft a rookie a Ruggs someone else then have JJaw as well Ward and we just might have a respectable WR group with little depth as well.

True BG but my point is there could be a number of reasons that the Eagles take two free agent WR's in free agency and one of them is because they already know that the WR they wanted in the first round , whoever that may be,  won't be there. That doesn't mean they wouldn't draft another WR or even two, just not in the first. Maybe the best safety will be there or the best CB. Of course I would like Ruggs as well but I am not counting on it. The Eagles very seldom take the guys I like. Last year was a perfect example. I liked Hunter Renfrow as a replacement in the slot for Agholor. Oakland took him and he had a pretty good first season for them minus the two games he missed from injury. Much better season than Whiteside plus he is a good return specialist. Renfrow drafted in 5th round and Whiteside drafted in 2nd round. You just never know with the Eagles draft selections in certain positions. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while though. We won a Super Bowl after all these years so anything is possible I guess.

We released Bradham freeing up like 4.5m...Eagles definitely have plenty of cap to spend what are we sitting at now 45m plus....

3.5 million in Dead money from that Bradham cut... moves LB into my top 3 Draft picks... is this some of the influence of the New coaches?. could we actually prioritize Lb’s? ....nah, maybe Joe Ostman  will make the cut this year and fill that spot.

To quote @1wrangler " The Eagles seldom take the guys I like.” The fact we cut Bradham and ate all that Dead money does not eliminate the possibility that when Jeffery gets healthy....in trade or not ... could eat his dead money? to get him out the door. That wouId be significant hit.  I think DeJax wants to finish his career here, how healthy can he stay is my only concern at this stage of his career. Perriman and Anderson have length, hands, and speed would be my preference. It’s possible  when the FA period ends we might get a little more clarity but with all these Coaching changes. I wonder what the New Eagle WR and DB are gonna look like.

Just another showing of how well Howie truly has been at drafting

And even looking at WR and CBs we haven’t really invested that highly in them....6 picks(3 each) in the top 3 rounds of the draft.

Invested a lot of money this past year didn't we?    That's my thinking .... if we want to bargain shop.... its the wrong position.    Watch how some of these guys are going to get 8 figure deals and we will be scratching our heads.   "  $12 mil for that guy"      I'd rather spend $20 on a sure thing than $12 mil on a maybe.  That's just me.   I think teams get in trouble doing things that way.   Take a stud and a cheap guy and watch that cheap guy work off the attention the stud gets.

Bradham gone now ... opens up the idea to flip that money into a nice young FA LB.    Again for me... this is the year I'm not saving any money.  If there are 25-26 year olds that can fill a need for me and are above average or studs at their spots... now is the time to grab them and lock them in before the next CBA and the cap goes up.   The right guys you keep, the wrong ones you let go later.

I’m focused on wanting to take Cesar Ruiz in round three. Getting a quality C that can learn a season under Kelce would be perfect timing. The way it should be done. Let Ruiz redshirt and learn from one of the best professionals. In case of emergency we have a legit option.
Day three I want to take Damien Lewis. The LSU G is 329 lbs 6’ 2”. He’s known as immovable. Not the most mobile. But this is one review of his talents —- "Takes up space as blocker, good lateral techniques, very good at keeping balance, hard to move, leverage is his game, super powerful at point of attack, great effort player, strong as they come”

For me that’s a perfect get on day three for us at G.

Ham, I don' watch college at all... but had to flip on some of that final due to the QB getting all the hype.    The pocket he had to throw the ball was huge.    I said right there, if we end up with one of the Guards or C from LSU, I would assume that is a good player.   Never seen anything like it... hat QB is in for a rude awakening come the pros.

There is no dead money on Bradham his contract wasn’t guaranteed...It was an option that we did not take

Maybe there was dead money but still 4.5m savings or pay Bradham damn near 10m in cap this year easy decision.

Stine, I understand the injury factor,   But, the new team would only be liable for the base salary.   The " contract"  is $9.9 mil.   Watch how much these so so guys get in free agency this year.   $12 or 13 mil for some of these guys.   I think a team for sure would pay Alshon $9.9 mil than one of these other guys, especially since they won't be on the hook for anything else in 2021, but have him under team control.    Personally, I think he stays here, simply because of the cap situation for us and that saving the $749k is really nothing.  The valjue play is putting him on PUP and then seeing if he can play towards the end of the year.    That's the value play.   But I do think he will be on the trade market both now... and as the season starts etc.   I think his value goes up as team's would see he is ready to come back... a team like Buffalo (if they fail to get a weapon) where a WR can make a difference.  for sure.

But I agree he stays, just more so because of the Eagles trying to squeeze out that value.

Stine... its not either or for me.   Draft picks are 50% ... pro bowlers at age 25 don't hit free agency.   I'm with Wrang... too much can happen still.   We need to see who hits the market as a FA... then who we sign, then worry about the draft.   Again, I don't put much stock in college players... that;s just me.   The QB class when we got McNabb was supposed to be great right?    Well.... we saw how that turned out.   I really don't care how deep a class is at one position,,, because we aren't getting all of those players.   The only ones that concern me are the players the Eagles get.   I'm not sure how the OT spot was when we drafted Lane or the DT spot when we drafted Cox... all I know is we got great players for our team.

I look at the team as a puzzle.  You need all the pieces.   What dictates to me is the order of events.   I secure my guys first.   I look to FA next ... then the draft last.  I never draft just for this year... that needs to be long term for me.   If a young pro bowl player is there in FA, I take a shot.   Id; rather go all in for a 80 catch 1200 yard guy that gets covered by the #1 CB.. than a over pay a mediocre free agent that is going to be a complimentary player.

As for contracts... yeah... we won a SB with Alshon while getting him early for peanuts... I'm ok paying the back end, which if he didn't get hurt, he would be worth the $$... trade value would be real high as mediocre WRS are about to make 4 or 5 more mil than him this year.  But I will for sure pay a guy that is 4 plus years younger the big money now.  WE had $30 mil of dead money the year we won a SB... that doesn't scare me at all.

I like the Chicago kid Kwiatkoski think he fits exactly with what we want from our LBs and shouldn’t cost much since it’s doubtful we are looking to spend much at the position.

Reports and rumors keep saying we might trade for Darius Slay....One said we could trade Sidney Jones and a 3rd for him.

One issue one might have with slay though he is 29(won’t turn 30 until January 1st so playoff time) but will bring looking to get paid. How much would we want to really invest in a 29 year old CB????

If you remember the excuse from the coaching staff was that they didn't want to play Whiteside until he learned all the  WR positions which is BS. My philosophy is that with every completed catch a wide receiver gains more confidence. Let him get his feet wet early with some of the easier receiver patterns to get some confidence which leads to more understanding of the more complicated pass patterns you break into when the defense changes up at the line of scrimmage. Of course we will never know how it would have worked out but now the kid has all kinds of pressure on him to succeed and if he doesn't this year the fans will conclude that he was a bust and be on his case just like Agholor and when that happens a lot of young players shut down completely from the negatively of the fan base.  To me this was just another case where our annual change at the WR position is affecting the offense in a negative way. Its about time the Eagles get a receivers coach that knows what is going on and lets not forget that experience is simply the name we give our mistakes and every pro bowl player has made a number of them getting there.

Two things come to mind when you bring up Slay. He is just as effective in man to man as he is in zone. Even Schwartz can't screw up a guy like that. Secondly, I believe everyone is well aware that the Eagles are going to bring in more than one outside corner this year whether it be in free agency or the draft so who would you rather have them learning from? Slay or an existing CB the Eagles already have on the roster now? Slay may only be worth one contract due to his age  but he could teach the others the Eagles bring in to be better corners.  Slay is definitely a good sound corner technically but if my memory serves me correctly he is not known for his interceptions. More for breaking up passes but not intercepting them. The club needs more turnovers. The Eagles were the only team this year to make the playoffs who weren't rated in the top ten in turnover ratio. Can't depend on getting to the playoffs most years without improving that ratio tremendously.
