[News] Early Thinking On Some Roster Battles To Watch

It could be one of those situations(if Lane was out and Peters still in)....I like Seumalo at RT better than V. But would uprooting my LG to RT and then moving in a new LG be the answer. Or do I just insert V at RT to not disrupt the whole line? They already said Dillard is strictly learning LT. Moving Peters to RT and inserting Dillard at LT is also an option. Tough call if things went down like that.

With you on not rushing anyone back... if they are ready though, they play.      As for Dillard and Peters... I don't see either playing anywhere other than LT.   Barring multiple injuries.  I also like Seumalo better at RT than Big V.... the quandry of mving multiple guys... it did work before though.  Who knows... I'd like to never see that issue and just worry about LT...lol.  That decision should hopefully be easy.

I could see Maddox starting at FS, Slot or either outside CB spot. Or coming in for packages off the bench. He’s the true wild card for me. Not sure how it plays out with him.

Jones is a huge wild card for me also. Can he win an outside or slot starting job? Not sure. We could trade him possibly.

Completely agree. The question for me is: At what point does the team need to determine his long term position and allow him to grow and focus on that? Being versatile is great and means we can use that when needed but should the team let him settle at a position?

Brown is very talented. The problem is he isn’t a leader. He doesn’t call the defense. And his biggest knock is he’s known to freelance more than actually play his role. I doubt he was willing to sign any longer term near those prices. There is a reason he was still available. But if he buys in to being an Eagle then....we always can extend during the season. I like just getting guys in the door to actually see how they fit first. We got a very good undrafted LB also. Kamu came into his own last season also. Bradham changed our whole LB room since he arrived. But I’ll take the one year very affordable price tag for Brown this season and see what happens.

I tend to disagree ham. Bradham wasn't a leader when he arrived either. In fact he was rather stupid in getting into trouble with the law twice. Seems like I read somewhere where Schwartz told him that if he keeps doing stupid things, after awhile people are going to start calling you stupid and they will have an legitimate argument. Okay he was forced to call the plays after Hicks when down with an injury and he had an opportunity to prove that he wasn't stupid after all. In Bradham's overall PPF grade, his highest score was defending the pass so maybe he doesn't belong on the inside even though he can call the plays. I just think that when you have an opportunity to sign the third best linebacker in the league for 2018 you get more than one year out of him. This is probably just one more example of not everyone in management being on the same page with the value of the linebacker position.  When a guy has been in the league for 8 years and the last year he played he was still rated third best in the league. he has nothing to prove on a one year proof it deal. His career was not on the down swing like a guy like Paul Worrilow who lost his starting job on two teams before he arrived here.

Wrangler, why was the third best LB(as you put it) still on the street without a team after the draft and available to sign so cheap? I’m just trying to read between the lines here.

This is only his second season. But sure. He has to go win a job. But look at Jenkins. His versatility has been huge. Do you want him just playing SS? Or is his best use as a LB/Slot/S hybrid? I’ve always believed in moving your DBs to cover certain matchups. Meaning you play all over. Not really Schwartz way. You know, keep Maddox on the small little burner guy and have Douglas on the bigger possession receiver type....wherever they line up.

Wrangler, once he’s in the building and shows a ‘fit’ why couldn’t you extend him after that? Seems ideal to see exactly how he does under Schwartz here before commiting long term first. It would be different if you were saying we missed out on getting him here because we wouldn’t commit long term.

Mcleod is practicing today. Huge for him to be ahead of schedule. Or he has a helmet on at practice today...at least. Just now confirmed he isn’t fully practicing so....my fault.

I'm with you.  I think these two are exactly as you says... wildcards.   We could have 2 pro bowl players?   So much better than the crap that was here for years... since Sheldon and Asante.  I like young unknowns with upside better than Nnamdi and Nolan Carroll.

I think with Maddox.. a big factor in where he plays are who steps up around him.  If Jones and Douglas step up.. to me that is best case scenario.

I like Maddox being able to move around per matchup.   My gut tells me free safety/ slot CB.   Like a Jenkins with versatility,  but specializing in the opposite.... FS instead of SS... and covering the quick guy instead of being 3rd LB and covering bigger slot WR/ TE.

I think it's to our benefit for him to be used to his specific talents.  Dawkins was innovative in how he was used.  Jenkins same way... so do the same with Maddox.

As for Brown... we have to keep in mind the new CBA and the 30% rule when paying guys after 2020.  Brown was also released and free the whole time... why wasn't he claimed?  Wouldn't have counted vs comp picks either.

We got him.  He is an Eagle, not sure what would be a mistake by not committing now. The only thing would be if you think we will then overpay him after this year to keep him?  That's pretty much the only possible negative.  If he has success here, why would he leave?  If he has success then gets paid,  we get a nice comp pick.  I am ok how it was handled by Joe Douglas.

To Ham's point with Brown and the LB position as a whole this offseason.   Brown being available and not counting vs the comp pick formula... plus from what everyone is saying a consensus 2 LBs that were way above the rest in the draft.  Logic states that Brown should have been more in demand?   Maybe he was but just wanted to come here?  IDK, but I can't look at his one year cheap deal as a bad thing for Joe Douglas to do.

Personally how I view the offseason and draft(all theory to this point)- 1) Improved offensive weapons for Wentz, should produce more points than last year 2)Got some depth we needed, ensured the basic positions are filled for the future.3) D should show a slight improvement, combining this with more points scored on offense,we should be fine 4)Losing Fipp,Defillippo and Reich hurt, expect with a years more experience their replacements will do better.5)Eagles FO did a great job with departing players,so in the future they may want to play here again if we want them back 6) I hope the training staff learned how to take care of players better (I miss ONLY this part from Chip).7)Ped-another years experience.8) My dream is to see a falloff of STUPID penalties at in-opportune times

Props to Kelce for being at OTA's, getting things done w/ Carson. Always been a big supporter of Kelce, this is one reason why. A lot of vets wouldn't go thru this, he knows for this team to succeed, he and Wentz, the G's need to have this down. Thanks for all you do Jason!

Sorry ham its been a busy day for this old guy. Of course this is just my opinion but if you recall I have mentioned numerous times that the linebacker position is in an evaluation between what it was and what it is becoming.  Some teams are stuck in the past and some teams are moving on with the new style linebackers so consequently different styles will be more or less important to different teams. For that same reason guys like LB Devin White old style, LB Devin Bush old style went in the first round and also LB Brian Burns blitzing specialist also went in the first round and my guy LB Germaine Pratt new style fell to the second round. Depends on what type of defense you want to run. Brown graded out equally high by PFF against the run and the pass. New Style LB. So we essentially have two guys in Bradham and Brown that graded higher than most existing linebackers against the pass but Brown even graded out higher than Bradham stopping the run. If the Eagles are going to play with two linebackers on the field 60 percent of the time and very seldom blitz, we couldn't ask for two better linebackers so why not pay Brown for a couple years to get some continuity in a position that we really haven't had. I personally don't believe that Joe Douglas had anything to do with the length of Browns contract. I believe he had everything to do with bringing him in.

Guess it was Long Beach Island a place called Joe Pops? Bid place w/ 3 horshoe bars and one of the most amazing bartenders I've ever had the pleasure to serve me. Place could be maxed out as usual over capacity. He'd remember your name, what you were drinking and how you liked it.  Joe Pops a LOT of major bands would stop off, no advertising to try their new stuff. The Acme, then turned to the Ketch? Drank w/ Joe Piscopo and Jay Leno one night - fun.
